If you're not averse to refurbished hardware, I've gotten very good
deals from Computer Geeks, http://www.geeks....
I got from them an HP Pavilion DV6 with a 15" screen and the following
specs for about $650.

Processor : 8x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
This is a quad core CPU with dual threading in each core.
Memory : 8125MB
Resolution	: 1366x768 pixels
OpenGL Renderer	: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile
Audio Adapter	: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH

Running Ubuntu 12.04. Installation was without incident. Everything
worked with Linux right out of the box, except for the fingerprint
reader, which apparently is an issue on any hardware. But it's not
something I was planning on using anyway.

The closer you are to the code the happier you are.
