Value add investing is currently the buzzword among the VC community. Many investors are building out value creating capabilities to drive revenue for their portfolio companies. However, this has long been the preserve of big corporate/strategic investors, who can bring the power of their internal networks and customer channels to bear.

But what does this really mean.... Is funding fungible? How many investors can truly live up to their claims of being able to provide differentiated value creation through Portfolio Development? Are some of these services more valuable for companies than others? Will the ecosystem become saturated with these type of offerings? Is a strategic offering truly differentiated?

We are very pleased to welcome three highly influential global strategic investors to share their perspectives on the portfolio development space:

Lisa Nelson (General Manager, M12)

Lisa leads portfolio development activities for M12, Microsoft's strategic investment fund. Additionally, she also leads investment activities in the Pacific Northwest, VC engagement for Microsoft and marketing strategy and execution for the fund. Lisa's been with Microsoft for several years in a variety of roles across business development and finance. She most recently served as chief of staff for the EVP of Business Development where she helped identify, pursue and support new areas of growth for Microsoft through key strategic partnerships, investments, and M&A.

Lisa is a Certified Public Accountant and has a Bachelor in Business Administration; Finance and Statistics from the University of Washington.


Nathanial Puffer (Senior Vice President at In-Q-Tel)

Nathanial Puffer is a senior executive with more than 20 years of experience in Information Technology and Data Security, including over a decade dedicated to directly managing and growing lines of business.

At In-Q-Tel, the strategic venture capital arm of the Intelligence Community, Mr. Puffer is the Senior Vice President stewarded with the Enterprise Technologies Practice. This portfolio includes Cyber, Infrastructure, and Analytics which encompass forward leaning technologies like adversarial systems, software defined networking, and artificial intelligence. In addition to driving the Enterprise Technologies tech strategy & team at IQT, Nat represents IQT on select portfolio company investments as a BOD observer.


Hitesh Saijpal (Head of Portfolio Development at Cisco Investments)

Hitesh Saijpal is Senior Director and Head of the Portfolio Development team for Cisco Investments, one of the most active corporate VC's in the world. In his role, Hitesh's primary focus is bringing external innovation from startups together with internal opportunities with Cisco's customers, partners, and business functions. His team partners with portfolio companies in markets both core to Cisco - including security, data center, and collaboration - as well as markets of the future, such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and drones. Hitesh also has responsibility for functions supporting portfolio development, including marketing and relationships with VCs, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders, both within Cisco and across the industry. As a leader, Hitesh is committed to developing next-generation talent, building lasting relationships, and keeping a lens on tomorrow's disruptive technologies.

Hitesh is a 19-year Cisco veteran, starting his career in U.S. Commercial where he instilled a partner-first mentality. Since then, he has held multiple leadership positions across the sales organisation, most recently serving as Senior Director for Cisco's Software Sales group and acting GM of Cisco's $1B+ Collaboration Infrastructure Business.

Hitesh holds an MBA degree from Santa Clara University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a BS in electronics and telecommunications from the University of Mumbai.


James Stickland (CEO of Veridium ID) - Moderator

A seasoned executive in financial technology, James Stickland is tasked with driving business revenue and investment growth, as well as leading the company's global go-to-market strategy for its flagship solution, VeridiumID. Based out of the company's London headquarters, James comes to Veridium from the UK-based fintech firm Red Deer Systems.

Previously, he held senior leadership roles at HSBC, JP Morgan Chase and CISCO SYSTEMS, where he specialized in expanding a pipeline of venture capital and accelerating innovation within emerging technology portfolios.
