***This is an alternate trailhead for our Anniversary Hike that was announced earlier and starts in Brentwood (http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/107377502/). Richard has kindly volunteered to lead the group from here. We all end up in the same place***

WOW, its been 6 years since we started! Time to celebrate! Another milestone: we recently crossed the 2000-member mark.

The original Nike Missile base observation tower on San Vicente Mountain will provides a great location for for our Anniversary Hike.

You will also take a glimpse into United States military history. Numerous self-guided interpretive displays explain how from[masked], San Vicente Mountain was one of sixteen Los Angeles area Nike-Ajax supersonic anti-aircraft missile launch sites. Atop the radar tower we'll also be treated to spectacular views of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Encino Reservoir, the San Fernando Valley, and the Los Angeles Basin to the ocean.

See http://www.lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=54 for park info

Hike is about 6.5-miles out and back with an intervening loop and about 600 feet of elevation gain on the way to the park. It makes for an excellent moderate hike into The Big Wild.

I am starting the hike late for those that feel guilty about imbibing in the morning (weather permitting) . It will also provide time for last minute grocery shopping. There are picnic benches and facilities by the tower. No need to carry trash out.

This is a Potluck Event. Bring food/snacks and drink to share. Count on me to bring some white wine and red Solo cups. I will also bring enough napkins and plasticware for everyone. Please post in Comments section below what you will be bringing

Directions to Trailhead

From the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a white (or is it yelllow now?) line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Parking is free on the downhill side of the line.
