SJ City Council votes to ban Polystyrene - Show your support!
Speak up in favor of a polystyrene ban in San Jose!
The more technical name for Styrofoam ™ is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam. The City of San José has been working on EPS foam food service packaging reduction for some time. The City is preparing the next staff report to present to the City Council on August 27, 2013. At this meeting they will be deciding whether or not to adopt the phase-out ordinance to eliminate EPS foam food ware.
The proposal is to phase-out these products in two stages:
i) national chain restaurants to eliminate EPS foam food ware staring 1/1/14, and
ii) all other restaurants starting 1/1/15.
The ordinance we will be presenting will have exemptions allowed for the following circumstances:
i) economic hardship,
ii) unique packaging requirements,
iii) non-profit food service establishments.
