The Candidate (1972) - YouTube
Details
Robert Redford was an interesting figure, an undoubted Hollywood megastar who did almost all his best work as part of a duo (seriously, look up all his best known movies). The Candidate is the rare exception, as well as being the rare example of Redford in a deep film, about a serious subject, that pays off.
Redford reunited with Downhill Racer director Michael Ritchie for this political fable, playing Bill McKay, a young, idealistic lawyer who's recruited by the Democratic party to contest an unwinnable Californian Senate seat (how times have changed, eh?). His brash honesty proves a breath of fresh air and he starts to run strongly in the polls. But can he stay true to himself and still win?
