Group event update, and announcing: London Bisexuals BiCon Meet

From: John G
Sent on: Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:00 PM
We had a fantastic pub meetup on Thursday in the O Bar's clubroom, with our first time in a relatively quiet venue allowing more conversations to flow and some oh-so-comfy sofas (those who know the Waxy's Little Sister ones, these are way better!). We outgrew them a little actually, 17 people was just too many to fit on and around it. I left with a real buzz after a great turnout, and many of you have commented on your reviews what a great evening you had with some lovely, friendly, interesting people.

So onwards and upwards, I hope you can come to some of our next meetups. I'm trying to add more variety and use the weekends a bit more as a few people I've spoken to find it hard to do weekday evenings. As a little sneak peek, we have:

2 August - Salsa night, dance or learn to dance some sexy salsa with the 'Salsa Fantastica' group in the O Bar basement (this is Monday week). We had a fair bit of interest in the idea, so come check it out!

[another meet from the Ideas section sometime mid-August-ish, to be confirmed]

4 September - Comedy Camp - New Saturday night show! This'll be our 3rd time at this lgbt-friendly comedy club, but our and their first Saturday night show. Saturday not good? We'll be back here on 12 October too!

23 September - the regular 4th Thursday Pub Social meet

But now onto the main reason for this email, to tell you about the BiCon meet I've organised for 28 August - the last Saturday in August. This replaces the regular pub social that would have been on the Thursday before it, but I plan to schedule in one of the other 'ideas' on the site before then for those who aren't keen on BiCon. Probably either Dim Sum or Wimbledon greyhound racing (vote them up now to help decide, at Here's the BiCon event details...

London Bisexuals BiCon Meet

When: Saturday, August 28,[masked]:00 AM

Where: University of East London Docklands Campus
University Way
E16 2RD

Everyone else has their conventions and conferences, and bisexuals are no different. Bring on: Bi Con!

This year, its the UKs 28th BiCon, and is in London (it alternates with other cities). Furthermore, its even an International one this year with attendees from all over the world! It won't be back in London for a couple of years, so now is a great opportunity to find out what its like. If you come to the group to meet more bisexuals, expecting to meet maybe 10-15 each time, then how much better is coming to meet a few hundred?! If that gets a bit too much then you've got the rest of our group to hang with, especially those who've been to our meets a couple of times.

So instead of the normal August pub social, which would have been on the Thursday before it (when BiCon starts with an associated 10th International Conference on Bisexuality event), lets meet on the Saturday - so hopefully some of you who find it hard to come on weekday evenings will bring a new crowd to the group too. Its at the University of East London's Docklands Campus (more venue details (via the BiCon site)).

It?s a great opportunity to make new friends, as well as compare experiences and discuss anything bi-related you like, whether political or social or just something you've wondered about. There are talks and events (eg. workshop sessions) going on throughout the whole weekend - eg. "Bi Literature", "Bis on Screen", and the evenings switch over to dancing (ceilidh on Saturday), then music and DJs so you can party the night away! If you want to do the whole weekend then go ahead, there is also some interesting stuff on the Sunday which will be another big day - there's a weekend ticket covering all events if you book it.

Tickets are between ?10-?23 for the day (or weekend tickets are available) depending on your income. You can also turn up and buy them on the door and they cover all events on the day (obviously not food/drinks though).

I'm still deciding where best to meet (and will update this with final details nearer the time, you'll see an email if you rsvp yes/maybe), but it'll probably be either at reception or near the cafe/bar area, and I'll bring a logo, some group flyers for the community info area if I can do some in time (anyone offering to do one?) and might even be walking round with a meetup badge (know any good deals?). There are also lunch options to keep you going through the day if you want to stay longer. I'll probably be tweeting a bit on the day too, via our twitter account (londonbi)!

The venue also complies with modern accessibility standards and is flat, with lifts for accessibility to the odd few sessions upstairs. There's also accomodation (onsite if you book by end of July) if you want to do more of the weekend, and the nearest public transport is Cyprus Station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) - right outside the door.

For further details on the weekend, venue, and programme of events, see
Don't know anything about it? The 'New to' page will tell you the basics, and the general BiCon page (ie. not 2010-specific) is at

From one of our members... "There's nothing like being immersed in community for a whole weekend"

From the bicon site: "One year someone theorised that no matter what your hobby or interest is, there will be someone at BiCon into that too." (they couldn't disprove that after a few hours at the bar).
