Come along on Tuesday 18th November for a tour of the Thames River Police Museum!

About the museum
The origins of the Thames Police go back to the 18th Century. Then importers were suffering losses of £500,000 annually, with a considerable subsequent loss of import dues, while cargoes were unloaded on the un-protected River Thames.

A plan to protect the river by policing the Thames shipping was devised in 1797 by Mr. John Harriott, an Essex Justice of the Peace, farmer and inventor. The West India Merchants financed the first preventative policing of the central shipping area of the Thames.

The Thames River Police merged with the Metropolitan Police Service in 1839 under Robert Peel. It was setup in Wapping High Street where is still stands today.

The museum has exhibits including uniforms and documents, which trace the history of the Thames River Police from its inception to the present day. There is also a fine collection of the every day “Hardware” of policing from handcuffs to cutlasses.

The museum is quite small and is one large room, so we are limited to 20 people. The tour lasts about 1h 30mins and will be conducted by a retired Police officer who served with the River Police.
