Re: [philosophy-178] So Many Big Word -- And a Brilliant Idea

I also am (perhaps unfairly) wary. Are we going to have assurances that no comments will be "off-limits"? Given, for example, that I vigorously reject the Qu'ran's metaphysics and ethics as flat out false & wrong, what is the precise benefit of someone "explaining" the sacred laws apparently written within; just general interest?

I like big words.  Big words are my friends.  But then I always was a pretentious little *********************.

Anyway, I'm afraid you can include me out of the debate on Islam.  Whilst not wishing to denigrate Salim, and neither to slander any muslims I haven't met, most discussions I have seen about Islam have turned into recruiting events, and I am more than a little wary.

Unless, of course, we can have a debate on Witchcraft - and as it happens (ain't serendipity a wonderful thing?) we have a meetup on Tuesday to do that very thing - do come along, if you like!

Ciao for nao!

Yes that is a really good idea.

As far as what I'm most interested in to discuss - that would be the field of ethics - how do we determine what's right or wrong and is there even a 'right or wrong' or is it all relative?

Would also like to learn about Sufiism.
And another idea - esp for those of us who haven't read a great deal from the great philosophers - how about a meeting on each of them - to discuss their main ideas and contextualize them in the present time.

Hello,

What a great idea, Dave. Yes, I love the idea of a section on the message board which gives an overview of the major trends in philosophical thought. Sort of a free wheeling How to Bluff Your Way in Philosophy. It would also be a great idea to have this as a theme for a meetup.

Maybe we can do this in the fall. I am also interested in Salim's great idea to have a discussion about Islam and forms of Islam, like Sufism.

I'm so glad I asked!

Thanks,
Karen
