Outdoor Action and Adventure Photography - a seminar by Andy Nelson

If you’ve an interest in shooting outdoor sports, and you’d like to improve your action photography or if you’re looking for your next published image or simply want to take professional looking shots of your kids at football practice, this seminar is for you.

We will cover:

The process of a shoot with athletes, from pre-visualizing and preparation through to a captured image.  Advice on how to control your camera creatively to establish speed, motion and scale.  Working with athletes to achieve your shot and what it takes to shoot across a variety of sporting disciplines.

Throughout, we will also provide inside tips and tricks to help you make great, publication ready images.

What you will need:

This is a classroom based seminar, so whilst its always fun to have a camera with you, it will not be required for this session.

This session will run for approximately 1.5-2 hours.  Andy will be arranging a separate practical session with athletes for a small group who would like to practice shooting outdoor action.  Details of that session will be announced once details are finalised.

Andy Nelson is a professional adventure sports photographer working in the outdoor industry and has a passion for helping others get out there and make great images too.

    Excellent seminar.
Andy made everything seem so logical and straight forward and yet made me realise the things I overlook or forget to apply.

Andy strongly advocated checklists and I will certainly add to the minimal ones that I already have.

Thanks for the link Andy. The colours are certainly more vibrant than Saturday's version. I can see why you were so disappointed!!!

An extremely insightful presentation by an expert passionate in his subject. The Learning Cycle was so relevant to me, with my key learning point and now an action point - Andy's Output phase of not sitting on your work and leaving it on your computer but getting it out there. Thanks Andy and Alex.

I found it great too. Andy has an excellent, informal but very informative way of presenting things. Can't really say anything that Steve and Francis haven't already said better. Thanks to Andy & Alex.

This was a great presentation containing a lot of useful tips, some of which I would never have thought of for myself. Thank you Andy. And thank you Alex for organising the meetup.

A well presented review of a number of technique points that contribute to better action photography. Plenty of practicality and inspiration pitched to an audience of varying degrees of experience. Would like to do some field work with Andy, but unfortunately can't make next Saturday - another day I hope. Well done, much appreciated.

Cheers Dave, can you clarify what you mean by 'selection reasons'

Anyone else, looking for something specific?

    August 28, 2013

    • Dave E.

Situations where you may decide in advance to specifically pick a slow speed or alternatively a fast shutter speed.

Hi Andy, I'd like to cover a bit about applicable flash techniques as I always think this adds some pazazz to an otherwise flat or silhouetted shot (fill-in against a bright sky for example) - especially off camera flash.

Selection reasons and the impact of the shutter speeds you use on your action pictures.

IF anyone has something specific they'd covered, speak up in the comments, I'll see what we can do.
