Documentary Photography and Photojournalism

Documentary photography and photojournalism are powerful ways of conveying a message, to raise awareness about an event which may otherwise have gone unnoticed, or chronicle a particular time or place.

The LPMG DocPhoto monthly meetup aims to promote these particular styles of photography, and will be an opportunity for those who attend to show their work and projects and obtain feedback*, initiate collaborative work, gain advice and inspiration, or simply to meet others interested in this particular type of photography.

Each month an assignment is given which people can carry out individually or in partnership with another member - Aug/Sept assignment was 'working' - so creating a body of work around people at work. Your 6 best images are then be posted on the Flickr Group (details given on the evening), where constructive feedback can be given, and people can indicate which 6 images are their favourite for a given month.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to present their project and have their images critiqued by the other attendees during the meetup.

If you did not attend last month's meeting, you are still welcome to present a project you are currently working on.

If those people who would like to present a project could please ensure the images are available somewhere online (Flickr, 500px, your own site, etc), and provide me with a link before by Wednesday 24th.

Things to note:

- If you attended the last meetup, you should upload 3 of your best images for the assignment to the Flickr group for feedback before Wednesday 24th, but preferably earlier to allow people to offer you feedback.

- A copy of the image you have chosen to have critiqued should be available online somewhere - preferably on Flickr.

*If you do bring work to show to others who attend, please ensure they are presented in a portfolio of some sort to minimise the potential for damage being done to your work, and to make it easier for people to look at within a busy pub environment.

I've always been interested in the genre, but would like to have the guts and the know-how to shoot where there are people in the shot. And also tips on how to shoot in public places without getting arrested.

Hi Ray. There is a link posted on the flickr site that covers the legal aspects of photography in public places.

Despite being a member for some time, this is the first LPG meetup I will have managed to attend! Is it OK to bring cash on the evening, as opposed to paying online? Looking forward to gaining some inspiration!

I am new to photography and so don't really have a body of work to show. I am still learning and very much a beginner but I am interested in Documentary Photography and photojournalism so would it be worth me attending this meet up.

Hi Vanita - I've just emailed you, but just for the record, yes - the event is constructive for photographers of all abilities. If nothing else you will gain some insight into what makes a good documentary image (at least based on those who attend! :) ). I hope to see you there.
