Visit to new vegan & vegetarian café in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire

Meet at 1pm in the ticket hall at Berkhamsted station (plan).

A new vegan and vegetarian café called Dar Papillon (Facebook) has recently opened in the lovely historic market town of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

It's less than 30 minutes by train from Euston. Berkhamsted rail station has two exits, so after leaving the platform turn right and you will find the ticket hall where I will meet people at 1pm before we proceed to the café. After we finish eating at the café if the weather is nice and people want to we could go for a walk taking in the sights.

Berkhamsted has a ruined castle, a canal, a totem pole, an old style sweet shop and lots of historic buildings and is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Chiltern hills.

Dar Papillon is run by a lovely local couple and serves delicious vegan cakes and a wide selection of teas and coffees as well as vegan hot food.

The café's address is[masked] High Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire HP4 1HU (see map - Cook's Delight closed in 2010).

Here's their menu:

Robin, if you see my earlier comment, you'll notice that the menu is in two parts (you've only included the first part above).

Sounds lovely. Any thoughts on a date/time?

Their web site (if I can call it that!) suggests that they're actually vegetarian with vegan options. Is that still the case, or have they gone fully vegan?

I've talked to Salva who runs the cafe (and her husband is someone I used to work with in Hemel Hempstead, small world!) and written them up for October Vegetarian Living magazine, so unfortunately I can't post that here, but she told me that ALL food is vegan, the only non-vegan thing on the menu is cow's milk option for drinks. They have loads and loads of savoury vegan food and cakes, it sounds fabulous.

The weather forecast for Sunday is sunny and 27 degrees, so should be a great day to get out of London and enjoy the vegan delights of Hertfordshire. The café has seating outside in their garden, so we may be able to enjoy delicious food and the sunny weather together. I've now added the menu to the event details. There is also the option for some sightseeing, including the ruins of an 11th century castle.

And yes, Katriona, they sell vegan cakes (with gluten free options) :-)

I'm pretty upset that joining a Vegan Meet Up group meant I'd get bothered by vegetarians! Just so everyone knows Vegans & vegetarians are nothing like each other & I'm not sure why they are ALWAYS grouped together??? If I get spammed by vegetarian groups again I shall be leaving 'Vegan Meet Up' being as it's NOT for Vegans!!

      Dear Miranda,
Nobody said that what you believe is wrong.
What people trying to tell you is that if you like to persuade others that your way of life it the right one, you should learn to appreciate other people’s opinions first.
After all we are very lucky to be able to live in a country where people are allowed to develop their own lifestyle and their own opinions. No religion, political opinion and lifestyles’ are forced upon you.
All this includes that you have to learn who do deal with other people’s opinions and their life style choices. I am not sure what you are doing on a daily basis, but if you approach people the way you did in all of your comments (btw vegetarians are actually closer to your way of life than most of the British population) you will cause of a lot of unnecessary tension in your and most important other people’s life.

Just you explain why I was so upset about your comment: I grow up in a socialist country with no choice to develop my own political view, food was available, but not much choice of fruit and veg. Hence being a vegetarian would have been very difficult. I had only limited choices even when deciding my own profession. That’s why I do not appreciate people who are trying to force their opinion upon me.
I accept your political views, life choices etc. and wouldn’t dream of trying to turn your way of life, so please try to do act the same way towards me. I am happy to discuss everything, but it has to be in a calm way appreciating everybody’s view point.
Again, aggressive agitation is not the way forward.
      Thank you for understanding,
      Sylvia

Do check out the interior photos, the place has a very, err, eclectic look http://facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.185101971621481.41488.178449862286692

    Hi Robin,
Our community has an event on the same day. Mahersh and I will have to be "maybe". We can ring the cafe, see if you are still there and how long you are planning to stay. We will be travelling from Potters Bar to Berkhamsted if we make it to the Meet Up.

1:47 hour rail journey each way (plus about an hour walking in total) at a cost of £13.90 (plus food), let's just say that I'm a very unlikely 'maybe'...

    July 18, 2012

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Sounds good, just looking to see how I'd do the journey, if I'm free, and noticed the location is still wrong (when will Meetup ever wake up to the fact that you need to use the name of the location with Google Maps, not just the address?!).

I just spoke to Salva who runs the café and she confirmed that all the food is vegan. The only thing they serve that isn't vegan is cow's milk, but they do serve hemp milk. They can sit 25 people upstairs and more downstairs. They can make vegan pizzas, samosas and pakoras amongst other things as well as serving gluten free vegan cakes.

    July 18, 2012

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

I've emailed them about this Meetup (just in case) and about the need to change the Google map, and also emailed Alex Bourke (of Vegetarian Guides) on the very unlikely off-chance of him not knowing about them ;-)

Is it a vegan cafe or a vegetarian cafe?

    July 18, 2012

What is the maximum number of people that can be accomodated by Dar Papillon? If it is reasonable number I can spread the word to Jain Vegans community. Are children welcome?

    July 18, 2012

I've added a temporary Google Map at the bottom of the description, which includes the previous shop on the Street View image from 2009.

Hi Richard, Thanks for adding the picture. It looks good. They don't have much info on their website yet as they're quite new, so I included their Facebook page instead. I'm going to meet people at Berkhamsted station and guide people on the 5 minutes walk to the café.

Hi Robin, I've added a photo and a link to their website, will try to sort out the location.
