What we're about

Fiction writers, hello! If you're in need of a writing group of like-minded individuals - congratulations, you've found it. Welcome. You must live in London and be writing fiction to join our community.

At its heart, London Writers' Cafe gives unpublished and emerging fiction writers a place to find constructive feedback on their work and learn more about how to get published, finding the right agent, writing more frequently or smashing the blocks through galvanising talks, peer critique and workshops.

Our writers are at all stages and levels (from start to submissions) so it doesn't matter if you've been writing for years, or just a few months, we're here for everyone and we'd love to meet you. However, all membership requests are reviewed by admins so please answer the questions we've asked - and you'll need to be an approved member before you can RSVP/pay for our sessions. Requests are normally approved within a few days but often faster. Please check your location is marked as London before you ask to join.

Lastly, we don't believe in groups where everyone is forced to contribute/offer feedback *shudder* so we'll never pressure anyone to read before they're ready. Read more from Lisa on what makes a quality writing group (http://www.publishingtalk.eu/writing/thinking-of-joining-a-writing-group-ask-yourself-these-8-questions-first/).

Group feedback and writing advice sessions

In our regular writing workshops, members volunteer to read up to 3,500 words in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Reading spaces are 20-30 minutes long; time enough to read and hear feedback from listeners. Feedback is moderated, constructive and encouraging (we're not in the business of killing dreams). We also have sessions of writing together where pieces are not shared and it's all about getting words on the page. See our calendar (https://www.meetup.com/londonwriterscafe/events/calendar/) for upcoming sessions.

Talks, workshops & socials with publishing professionals

As well as feedback and writing sessions, LWC boasts an array of advice talks with leading professionals (including top Literary Agents, Publishers and Editors), technical writing workshops (characterisation/voice/POV/pacing etc) taught by experts as well as memorable social events and parties.

For writing competitions and thrilling opportunities to submit work to agents, literary journals and publishers and magazines, join our community on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ldnwriterscafe/). Tweet with us @ldnwriterscafe (https://twitter.com/LDNwriterscafe) or connect with writing competitions via our group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ldnwriterscafe/) for extras from our community.

If needs must, send us an email and we'll do our best to send a prompt reply.

We hope to meet you very soon and happy writing!

Lisa & Liz

Fantasy worlds and fantastic people w/ author Anna Stephens

In this session celebrated fantasy writer, Anna Stephens, will explore the elements that go into creating a coherent, believable and three-dimensional fantasy world, including magic, myth, economics and politics. She’ll identify some of the key characteristics that make a world feel ‘real’ and with a sense of depth and history. From there, she’ll discuss how to actively weave story into your world building, how world affects character and conversely, how much impact characters have on the world, environment and society you have created. Although this will be mainly about fantasy writing, many elements will be relevant to those writing science-fiction as well. Anna Stephens is the author of the grimdark epic fantasy Godblind Trilogy, published through HarperVoyager UK, Talos Press in the US, and in translation in Europe, as well as several short stories in small presses and charity anthologies. A literature graduate, she loves all things speculative, from Doctor Who and Firefly to classic Hammer and Universal horror films. She’s run workshops on writing character, point of view, and battle scenes at conventions, and is an English tutor with The Access Project. Costs: £20.00, please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. Refunds will only be provided if the meetup is cancelled by admin, no exceptions, and in the rare event of speakers cancelling, we reserve the right to provide an alternative but equivalent speaker.
