Whether you’re writing a play, a novel, a short story or a screenplay, your characters will almost certainly need talk to each other. Here you have choices, options and endless possibilities. When it works, dialogue flows like water, but what’s going on underneath? What makes it dramatic? How do we use dialogue to keep our stories moving? What makes it realistic and what are the alternatives? What’s the relationship between written dialogue and conversation in ordinary life? Dan will consider different approaches to dialogue, some traditional, some very contemporary, and he'll give you a memorable toolbox that gets your dialogue doing exactly what you need it to do. Agents tell us that they use dialogue as a measure of writing talent when assessing a manuscript, and who better to learn this skill from than Dan Rebellato.
A playwright and professor, Dan’s internationally performed stage and radio work include 'Here’s What I Did With My Body One Day', 'Chekhov in Hell' and 'Beachy Head'. Dan has recently completed an award-winning 27-episode novel sequence for Radio 4 and his next projects include a classic of French Romantic Drama for Radio 3. He has twice been nominated for a Sony Award. Dan is Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Royal Holloway University of London and has published widely on contemporary British theatre and playwriting. He is co-editor, with Jen Harvie, of the 'Theatre &' series for Palgrave Macmillan.
