In this session we will explore the central issue of character with acclaimed writer, Tim Lott. What constitutes a well rounded character is one of the most basic keys to successful writing. What is the difference between a two and three dimensional character? Should they be consistent throughout the narrative or should they change - and are personality traits contradictory? Does a character need to be likeable? And what is the connection between character and plot? Tim will examine all this and more, and of course will answer any burning questions you may still have.
Tim Lott has been writing books for 20 years. His tenth, ‘When We Were Rich’ is published in June 2019, and is the sequel to his first novel, ‘White City Blue’ which won the Whitbread First Novel award. His memoir, ‘The Scent of Dried Roses’ is a Penguin Modern Classic. He has written two Young Adult novels, as well as his literary fiction and has featured prominently in the literary magazine Granta, appearing in its 21st anniversary edition as having authored one of the most significant pieces published in the previous 21 years. A former teacher of the Writing a Novel six-month course at the Faber Academy, Tim now teaches for Guardian Masterclasses.
