Worldwide, crime fiction has been one of the most successful and popular literary genres for well over a century. But why do we read crime fiction? What impulses drive us towards criminality? Focusing on trends within the current market – as well as some of the rudiments of genre writing such as character, setting, mystery and suspense - the discussion will explore the elements that make a successful crime novel.

Nathan Ashman is a Lecturer in Crime Writing at the University of East Anglia and the author of James Ellroy and Voyeur Fiction (2018). He has previously held teaching posts at both the University of Surrey and the University of Gloucestershire.
