Read About an Exciting Yosemite Labor Day 4 Day Backpack

  • Aug 30, 2013 · 6:00 AM

Don't sign up until you read the entire following information. I will not appreciate wasting both of our time to figure out that you do not have a genuine interest or are not qualified.

You should:

Be able to hike 7 miles, 3,000 elevation gain with a backpacking backpack in one day.

Have some backpacking experience (I don't need experts, just people who understand what it means to backpack and have done it at least once)

Be willing to commit to this trip (Friday, August 30 to Monday, September 2) and a hike on August 18 (which I will use to make sure you are indeed in shape).

Be willing to pay a fee of $34 as part of this process, which will go entirely towards permits and dinner afterwards. This fee will be nonrefundable past August 1. I want committed People only!

Be willing to meet me as part of the selection process. I will be posting hikes and will be willing to make some accomodations. I need to make sure that the people involved are compatible as we will be spending 4 days in close proximity.

Be comfortable doing your own thing. Apart from one portion of the trip and camping together, you do not have to follow my schedule (though all are welcome to try). I do not plan on babysitting anyone.

Not be scared of heights. A healthy concern for your safety is great, I just don't want someone to get stuck on the cables.

Be willing to use pit toilets and be without a shower for 3 solid days.

The plan:

Friday, August 30

Arrive in Yosemite Valley by noon (this means leaving LA by 6 am at the latest). You will need to take this day off work. Make sure that everyone is prepared and hike 5 miles to Little Yosemite Valley.

Saturday, August 31

Get up early (by 6 am) to avoid the crowds. Hike to Half Dome (including the cable part). We need to do this portion together, per the permit obtained.

Afterwards, you can join me for a summit of Clouds Rest. Half Dome is only 7 miles roundtrip. Clouds Rest adds 10 more miles to your day.

Sunday, September 1

I will be leaving early for Merced Lake. You can join me for this 20 mile hike in the Yosemite backcountry, or I can suggest plenty of options.

Monday, September 2

Hike back to our cars and drive home. We will stop for a Late Lunch/ Dinner and I will use fees collected to buy dinner and/or showers for folks.

Weather conditions may change the above plan.

Some further considerations:There will be 6 total in our group. If you want a friend to be considered, they need to join our meetup and contact me themselves. We can coordinate carpools once I determine who will go. I will need at least one other driver besides myself.

I will be using the next 6 weeks to make preliminary selections, along with a small wait list. I will then be asking those selected to meet me on a hike (unless we've already met and talked recently). I will try to make all the necessary determinations as quickly as possible so you can make other plans if necessary.

I will be asking for email addresses, so that we can then exchange some personal information (I don't need bank accounts, just stuff in case of an emergency or for carpool purposes). If you have any problems with any of this, please don't sign up or try to negotiate.

five stars, it could be nothing else...the smoke and ash made it a surreal experience

Overall the trip was okay. The ash from the rim fire ruined the trip a little bit and the group was separated for a short while. However these factors were outside of anyone's control. I am rating it five stars because of the planning couldn't have been any better. Thanks Jose sorry we left early.

Hi Jose, my boyfriend and I are really excited to see this meetup. We have always wanted to do half dome. We have done havasupai backpacking, Kearsage path just last weekend. Looking forward to this trip!

Jose, This is what I moved to CA for. Hope to join your group. 20 mile hikes are no issue, but I've only car camped and want to do a backpacking trip. Might get a couple in before this one.

This trip sounds amazing. I would like to go. I just did Bridge to Nowhere in the heat. I do a lot of local hikes in L.A. and surrounding areas. Getting more into the longer ones because the payoffs are so much better in every way! I have to look at my schedule, but it looks very likely that I will join the group. Excited- I haven't been up to Yosemite in years!

Hi Cindy, will you be signing up for this hike? If so, i have posted a June 9 hike in Griffith Park to meet some of the people interested. I do recommend attending if possible.

I love to hike, cross-country ski and have done several marathons so I am definitely fit for the excursion. The trip also happens to fall during my vacation so it would be an opportunity that would definitely work with my schedule. I have done half-dome in the past, by myself, but would like to do it with a group of people. I hope I am one of the chosen.

I've backpacked Mt Whitney and several other places. Half Dome is one of the places I have yet to check off on my bucket list. I hope I make your selection process!

Lately I've been hit with an urge to stand atop a high peak. This is the perfect opportunity.

<< ---- Recognize this location? (from Half Dome ...) :o)

I've done several 7-day, 50+ mile backpacks. I've also done Half-Dome & Clouds Rest on back-to-back days, but never in a single day. Also did Clouds Rest from Tanaya Lake so am interested in approaching it from the southwest. Starting at 6am from Little Yosemite will assure having he summit of Half Dome virtually to yourself -- most permit holders will be starting from Happy Isles. Never been to Merced Lake and that looks like a great trail with some sheer cliffs overhead in Lost Valley!
