Meet in the Olive Street lobby (NOT the Grand Avenue lobby on the other side of the building) of the Biltmore Hotel, facing Pershing Square, at 8:30 a.m. There are public restrooms in the hotel and at several locations en route.
From the Biltmore we will zig-zag east and north through Downtown to Grand Park and City Hall, take the Metro to Wilshire and Western, stroll along Wilshire to MacArthur Park, take the Metro back to Metro Center Downtown, and zig-zag south and east to Les Noces du Figaro, a bistro in the heart of the Downtown historic district. Highlights of the walk include dozens of the most architecturally significant buildings in Los Angeles (among them the Biltmore Hotel itself, the Bradbury Building, the Eastern Building, the Broadway Arcade, the Wiltern Theatre, the Bullocks Wilshire Building) and several urban parks, large and small.
My best guess for distance is 4 or 5 miles. Plan on about two-and-a-half hours of walking plus time for two Metro rides. We will arrive at Les Noces du Figaro a little before noon.
LAVA has two presentations on "Jazz Age Los Angeles" scheduled on the mezzanine level of Les Noces du Figaro between noon and 1:30 pm. Martin Turnbuill, author of the Garden of Allah novels, will be discussing "life at the hotel and its infamous bungalow courtyard" during the 1920s and 30s. Marc Chevalier, the historian of the Oviatt Building, will focus on the contemporaneous Crescent Heights Shopping Center across the street, which "fed, drugged and boozed the Garden of Allah's voracious guests".
The Pershing Square Metro Station and parking garage are only three blocks away for those who wish to skip part or all of the LAVA presentations. Rates for parking underneath Pershing Square on Sunday are reasonable--$7 for the day at last report.
There is free on-street parking on Sunday within a couple of blocks of the Biltmore Hotel (best bets are 4th Street and Hill Street). Or take the Metro to Pershing Square and walk across the square to the Biltmore. If you choose to take the Metro, and have not ridden recently, be forewarned that you can no longer purchase a $1.50 fare. Instead, you must first purchase a TAP card ($1) and then add your fare(s) to the card. Give yourself enough time to catch the Metro and make your way to the Biltmore Hotel Olive Street lobby by 8:30 a.m. We will depart promptly with or without you.
