Urban Walk -- Downtown Los Angeles

  • Aug 25, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Meet in the Olive Street lobby (NOT the Grand Avenue lobby on the other side of the building) of the Biltmore Hotel, facing Pershing Square, at 9:00 a.m. (NOT 8:30 a.m. as is usually the case for these walks).  There are public restrooms in the hotel and at locations en route.

From the Biltmore we will make a loop through Downtown, starting north across Bunker Hill to the Civic Center, then east and south through Little Tokyo and the warehouse district, and finally back through the fashion district and the historic core to Les Noces du Figaro, a bistro three blocks from Pershing Square and the Biltmore Hotel.

My best guess for distance is about 4 miles. Plan on about two hours of walking. We will arrive at Les Noces du Figaro around 11:30.

LAVA has two presentations scheduled on the mezzanine level of Les Noces du Figaro between noon and 1:30 p.m.  Paul Nugent will "give a brief history of the Atherius Society, the spiritual organization . . . brought to Los Angeles by Yoga Master and extraterrestrial contactee Dr. George King in 1959."  But wait, there's more!  The second presentation features Charlton Davis, creator and curator of "the seminal 1980s micro gallery The Art Dock, located on the loading dock of the endangered 1888 Pickle Wicks Building".   Davis is author of The Art Dockuments: Tales of the Art Dock: The Drive-by Gallery.

The Pershing Square Metro Station and parking garage are only three blocks away for unenlightened philistines who prefer to skip part or all of the LAVA presentations. Rates for parking underneath Pershing Square on Sunday are reasonable--$7 for the day at last report.

There is free on-street parking on Sunday within a couple of blocks of the Biltmore Hotel (best bets are 4th Street and Hill Street). Or take the Metro to Pershing Square and walk across the square to the Biltmore. If you choose to take the Metro, and have not ridden recently, be forewarned that you can no longer purchase a $1.50 fare. Instead, you must first purchase a TAP card ($1) and then add your fare(s) to the card. Give yourself enough time to catch the Metro and make your way to the Biltmore Hotel Olive Street lobby by 9:00 a.m. We will depart promptly with or without you.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. My mobile number is[masked]-0168.

A great walk through Downtown L.A. an architectural wonder! It was fantastic walking through districts from fashion to business and everything in between. As an urbanite, I drive through these areas with no time to stop and look. The walk was an excellent opportunity to take the time to stop and appreciate the city in which I live. The only sad part is the splendor of exceptional architectural pride and design of an era gone by will soon be replaced by the bland unimaginative glass and steel monoliths that pepper the area today. We had just enough exercise, conversation, and visual delights for a Sunday morning walk. Thanks Tuck.

Just double checking that you do, in fact, mean 9 because further down in your description it says 8:30 but I am assuming its because its a "cut and paste"? Just don't want to be late and miss out.

    • Tuck

Yes, 9:00 a.m., not 8:30. (I have corrected the disrepancy buried in the later paragraph.) Sorry for any confusion.
