This is two hikes in one day.

Come for one, or the other, or both!

-------------------------------
NOTE: DUE TO THE LARGE RESPONSE, I HAVE LIMITED THE ATTENDANCE TO THE MORNING HIKE TO THE 105 MEMBERS WHO HAVE RSVP'D. THIS IS BECAUSE I THINK IT WILL BE HARD TO FIND PARKING FOR MORE THAN THAT IN THE TWO LOTS NEAR THE GROTTO AND THE ROADSIDE.

HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE NO LIMIT FOR THE 3 PM HIKE TO SANDSTONE PEAK, AS THERE ARE TWO LARGE LOTS AT THAT TRAILHEAD AND THERE ARE OVERFLOW SPACES ON THE ROADSIDE. SO IF THE MEET-UP RSVP BOX REJECTS YOU, COME ANYWAY!

REGARDLESS, PLEASE CARPOOL IF YOU CAN.

--BRING A HAT!!!! BRING A GALLON OF WATER PER PERSON IF YOU ARE DOING BOTH HIKES! STAY COOL AND HYDRATED!
--------------------------------

The first one is relatively easy: down from the Circle X Ranch ranger station to the Grotto and the various waterfalls. The Grotto is really cool because this is a 20 foot underground waterfall, located in a room under a giant boulder in the canyon. On the way we've got lots of wildflowers, and a mix of sunny and shady trail.

DISTANCE: 1.5 MILES EACH WAY. Elevation gain/loss: around 300 feet

TIME: NOON--2:45 pm

MEET AT:
THE RANGER STATION PARKING LOT. NOTE: this is the westerly roadside parking lot at the Ranch. There is a big parking lot below the ranger station, next to the group campground. (SEE MAP: http://www.nps.gov/sa... (http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/upload/CircleX8-08.pdf)

-----------------------------------------------

SECOND HIKE: Move cars to the Mishe Mokwa Trailhead (most easterly parking area in the Ranch--you'll know it because there are parking areas on both sides of the road.), and take the 6 mile loop to Sandstone Peak, which is the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3011 feet. Our hike gains 1000 feet in elevation over the first 5 miles, then we drop back to our cars.

LOTS OF COOL SANDSTONE FORMATIONS, AND A 360 DEGREE VIEW AT THE TOP...

TIME: 3 TO 7 pm

HOW TO GET THERE:

I strongly recommend that you avoid taking Pacific Coast Highway, no matter how tempting, as you're likely to sit in traffic for hours. Instead, take the 101 Freeway west to Kanan Dume Road in the city of Agoura Hills. Take it to the south, towards the beach. In about 5 miles, you will come to Mulholland Highway, Turn right, going west. In about a mile, the road forks. Take the left fork onto Encinal Canyon Road. Follow this for about 2 miles. It will run into Decker road. Turn Right. This will lead very shortly again to Mulholland. Turn left (west) . A short distance ahead is an abrupt right turn called Little Sycamore/Yerba Buena Road. Take this twisty road for another 2 miles and you will see the parking area for the Mishe Mokwa trail If you continue west on this road for another mile, you will see the ranger station, site of the first hike.

At the ranger station, there is a restroom and we can fill up our water bottles there.
