Mt. Washington and Ernest Debs Regional Park hike

OK folks, after being a little MIA, I'm back with a new name/handle (one that is less cumbersome than my previous), and a new neighborhood.

This hike will showcase my new backyard of NE LA. We will be hiking through Ernest Debs Park in Montecito Hts (think a mini Griffith Park but only known to local residents), and through some residential neighborhoods where we will stop to briefly check out (for a few minutes) the self realization fellowship as well as the southwest museum.

This IS a transit/carless friendly option as we will be meeting specifically at the Southwest museum station on the Gold Line between DTLA and Pasadena.

We will be hiking along Marmion up some steps to Canyon Vista Dr., along Mt. Washington Dr to San Rafael Ave to Moon Ave. back down to the Southwest Museum. We will then cross Sycamore Park to take a pedestrian walkway that crosses the 110 to take a loop trail through Ernest Debs regional park which includes a grassy slope as well as a brush and woods covered north slope and a small pond.

The whole hike will be 6-6.5 miles and will be take between 3.5-4 hours total.

We will have lunch (YES BRING A LUNCH) at Sycamore park, our approximate halfway point. If you can only join us for the second part of the hike, meet us at Sycamore Park close to the train station.

You know the drill as far as what to bring: hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, LUNCH, camera, basic first aid stuff, etc.

Hello Ranger Bob, is this considered a beginner or moderate hike or somewhere in between?

    October 11, 2013

    • Bob G.

Its about 5.5 miles or so, and about 4-500 feet of elevation gain so I would consider it moderate.

I'll be coming up from South Bay, if anyone needs a ride!

Hi Ranger Bob -- I just cancelled, fearing that I won't be able to get there on time tomorrow. But thanks for organizing -- I hope to join another one soon!

    Can I bring a dog?

    October 6, 2013

    • Bob G.

Melody, I have no problem with dogs at all, they are welcome, but as I don't have a dog, I'm usually not up on dog regulations for specific parks, I would just google Ernest Debs regional park, to see what it says.

Hi Melody, you should not have any issues bringing your dog. You just wont be able to go inside of the Southwest Museum with the dog. I've lived in this area all my life and I'll be bring my dog along too...

This is a very nice Historical museum right down the street from the planned walk\hike. Check it out when you have a chance. Heritage Square.

    Ranger Bob,
What's the elevation? Where do we park?

    October 8, 2013

    • Bob G.

Approximately 400 feet elevation gain. There are plenty of areas to park close to the station, There will some places to park along Marion as well as some of the side streets.

Is the area safe? The surrounding neighborhoods are pretty shady.

Don't get out of Bel Air or South Orange County much? Ha ha, just teasing. I couldn't help myself. Basically - the hilltops themselves are and from my understanding have always been safe and relatively upscale. The bottoms of the hills have always been more working class with some gang problems from time to time.

These areas are now becoming more hipsterfied. But, yeah, there is not a starbucks on EVERY corner, which sometimes causes people some concern.

Ernest Debs is in my backyard also and sometimes hikes there. One can get some great pics by the pond. Have fun guys!

What a great urban walk. Combines some of the hidden treasure of LA which I am anxious to visit again after a long absence. Thanks to Ranger Bob.
