Urban Walk -- Hollywood Hills

  • Oct 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Meet in the main lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel across from Grauman's Chinese Theatre at 9:00 a.m.  Converge on the hotel bar at the far side of the lobby from the Hollywood Blvd. entrance.  Those who arrive early and are disappointed that the bar does not open until 3 p.m. can take solace in the availability of a dozen bar stools while you wait for the group to assemble.  It's also worth wandering around the lobby and mezzanine for a few minutes.

Not for beginners.  This hike involves two hours of steady hiking up and down steep hills and stairways.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it.  Don't hesitate to put yourself of the waiting list, particularly if you have hiked with me before, as I am holding some spaces for you.

From the Roosevelt we will cross Hollywood Blvd., pass through the Hollywood and Highland complex and under the Loew's Hotel via a service passage on our way to the intersection of Franklin and Highland Avenues by 9:15, at which location latecomers will have one last chance to intercept us on the sidewalk in front of the Hollywood Methodist Church and the affiliated Oaks School before we disappear into the hills.

Within the first hour of the walk we will traverse several of the longest and most spectacular public stairways in Los Angeles, including the High Tower and Whitley Heights.  During the second hour, we will cross under the Hollywood Freeway and zig-zag through the hillside Hollywood Dell, Temple Hill, Beachwood Canyon, Bronson Canyon and Franklin Village neighborhoods.

Descending to Hollywood and Vine at approximately 11 a.m. the group will divide at the Redline Metro Station.  Those who so desire will return via the Metro to Hollywood and Highland, a block from our starting point at the Roosevelt Hotel.  Those who wish to join me for the L.A. Visionaries Association Sunday salon will take the Metro to Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles and walk three blocks to Les Noces du Figaro on Broadway.

LAVA has two presentations scheduled on the mezzanine level of Les Noces du Figaro between noon and 1:30 p.m.  Leslie Zemeckis, author of Behind the Burly Q, will discuss the history of burlesque in Los Angeles and Biola University Professor Paul Rood will introduce us to some of the colorful “Bible Women” of early Los Angeles. The “Bible Women” were an eclectic group of ladies who lived and served in some of the toughest and neediest neighborhoods of Los Angeles duirng the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, providing a blend of Gospel witness and humanitarian welfare assistance.  Be prepared for a full spectrum of the female experience in Southern California from burlesque to Bible banging.

The LAVA presentations are free, but attendees are requested to purchase a beverage, pastry or lunch from Les Noces du Figaro since they provide the meeting space for no charge.  After the presentations, we will return to Pershing Square and catch the Metro back to Hollywood and Highland, arriving around 2:30 p.m.

There is free on-street parking on Sunday within a couple of blocks of the Roosevelt Hotel. Best bets are Hawthorne between Orange and Highland, Highland between Hollywood and Sunset, and McCadden or Las Palmas between Selma and Hollywood, all within four blocks of the hotel.  There is valet parking at the Roosevelt and a large public garage across Orange Street from the hotel, but both will cost you $20 for the morning and more if you go to LAVA.  I am taking the Metro from Hollywood and Western, where there is plenty of free parking under the shopping center across the street.

If you choose to take the Metro, and have not ridden recently, be forewarned that you can no longer purchase a $1.50 fare. Instead, you must first purchase a TAP card ($1) and then add your fare(s) to the card. Give yourself enough time to catch the Metro and make your way to the bar in the Roosevelt Hotel lobby by 9:00 a.m. We will depart promptly with or without you.

My mobile number is[masked]-0168.

There are always last minute dropouts. If you will be able to join Sunday's hike should your RSVP be changed to "yes" as late as Saturday afternoon, post a note to that effect.
