Take an hour and a half, climb the 300 stairs or take the switch-back trails to the top--we get a 360 degree view from Downtown L.A. to Malibu to Palos Verdes and can watch the sunset. (There are three routes to the top: the stairs, the switchback trail, and Hetzler Road.) Then we explore the various trails on the hilltop.
MEET: Lots of cool people who've recently discovered this park, which opened 2 years ago.
WHERE: The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, located on Jefferson Blvd a half mile west of La Cienega Blvd.
MEET WHERE?: at the intersection of Jefferson and Hetzler road. There is a big entrance sign to the park there saying "BALDWIN HILLS SCENIC OVERLOOK".

PARKING: is free if you park on Jefferson. (You can also drive to the top of the overlook and pay at the State's parking lot. At the top is a visitor's center which so far is only open on weekends. HOWEVER, THAT MEANS YOU WILL MISS SEEING THE REST OF US HUFF AND PUFF!)
FREEWAY DIRECTIONS: the closest freeway to this hike is the 10. Take the La Cienega Blvd offramp and go south 1/2 mile to Rodeo Road (just past the Target store). Turn Right. The road forks soon becoming Jefferson Blvd., and take the left fork. Go west 1/4 mile until you see the undeveloped hillside on the left (south) side of the road. There's a big concrete State Parks department sign there, saying "Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook"..
YOUR HIKE LEADER: is also somewhat of an expert on local history, environmental battles and native plants, (so if you are looking for advice on drought tolerant native plants and wildflowers or suing developers to save open spaces, come on this hike)! You can see my blog at http://rare-earth-new... (http://rare-earth-news.blogspot.com) for stories on new parkland purchases and other environmental battles.

COOLNESS: The Scenic Overlook is part of a larger effort by the State and L.A. County to buy up the old oil fields and turn the entire undeveloped remains of the Baldwin Hills into a 1000 acre park.
I posted more about this here: http://rare-earth-new... (http://rare-earth-news.blogspot.com/search/label/Baldwin%20Hills)
BRING WATER, COMFORTABLE SHOES, MAYBE A HAT IF IT'S HOT...
DINNER AFTERWARD: at the vegetarian Indian restaurant called Bawarchi a mile away located at the southwest corner of Venice and Motor Avenue. Come hungry, leave full.
