Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook hike - 2 Hrs-followed by dinner

Take 2 hours, climb the 282 TALL stairs or take the switch-back trail to the top--we get a 360 degree view from Downtown L.A. to Malibu to Palos Verdes and can watch the sunset. (There are three routes to the top: the stairs, the switchback trail, and Hetzler Road.) Then we explore the various trails on the hilltop.

MEET: Lots of cool people who've recently discovered this park, which opened in 2009.

WHERE: The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, located on Jefferson Blvd a half mile west of La Cienega Blvd.

MEET WHERE?: at the intersection of Jefferson and Hetzler road. There is a big entrance sign to the park there saying "BALDWIN HILLS SCENIC OVERLOOK".

DOGS??????   NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! RANGERS WRITE BIG TICKETS--NO DOGS ALLOWED IN STATE PARKS!!!

DINNER AFTERWARD: at 8:45 at Pampas Grill,

3857 Overland Ave, Culver City CA90232

ROUTE:

From our Jefferson Blvd starting point, we take the stairs first to the top of the hill, then head south to the Visitor's Center and restrooms. Then we continue to the upper parking lot. From the parking lot we do first the 0.7 mile Canyon Loop trail, followed by the 1.4 mile Ball Fields Loop trail. Both of these loops start and finish at the upper parking lot. Finally, from the parking lot we then take the 1 mile Switchback trail down to Jefferson Blvd.

TOTAL LENGTH--AROUND 3.6 MILES

OTHER DETAILS:

NO DOGS. State Park rules forbid any dogs, even if on leash.

PARKING: is free if you park on Jefferson. (You can also drive to the top of the overlook and pay at the State's parking lot. At the top is a visitor's center which so far is only open on weekends. HOWEVER, THAT MEANS YOU WILL MISS SEEING THE REST OF US HUFF AND PUFF!)

FREEWAY DIRECTIONS: the closest freeway to this hike is the 10. Take the La Cienega Blvd offramp and go south 1/2 mile to Rodeo Road (just past the Target store). Turn Right. The road forks soon becoming Jefferson Blvd., and take the left fork. Go west 1/4 mile until you see the undeveloped hillside on the left (south) side of the road. There's a big concrete State Parks department sign there, saying "Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook"..

COOLNESS: The Scenic Overlook is part of a larger effort by the State and L.A. County to buy up the old oil fields and turn the entire undeveloped remains of the Baldwin Hills into a 1000 acre park.

BRING WATER, COMFORTABLE SHOES, MAYBE A HAT IF IT'S HOT...

A nice workout climbing up the stairs. Rex, thanks for organizing it!

Very relaxing, except for the stairs where we get real cardio workout. Today was a special hike: we had a trio of musicians making the hike particularly entertaining :). Thanks Rex for organizing it.

I found this in Rex's description of this hike: "NO DOGS. State Park rules forbid any dogs, even if on leash. "

Coming from Venice beach. Taking Uber there. How much time should I give? Should I bring water and food ? How long is the hike?

    July 22, 2014

    • rexfrankel

I don't know about Uber, but it's a half hour drive when traffic is good, worse at rush hour. Hike length is 2 hours, 3.6 miles, and bring water and large heavy objects to make going up the stairs difficult, if you want.
