Urban Walk: Echo Park and Elysian Heights

  • Jul 13, 2014 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

A relatively short walk of about 4 miles through two nearly adjacent but quite different Los Angeles parks and the intervening neighborhoods of Echo Park and Elysian Heights.    Elevation gain (and loss) of about 600 feet from the Lake to the top of the Elysian Park Trail.

Meet on the island at north end of the lake.  (Look for two small black dogs thought by some to resemble miniature bears.)  Park on nearby streets or two blocks north of the lake in the municipal lot just south of Sunset between Lemoyne Street and Echo Park Avenue.  Payment required 24 x 7 but the rates are reasonable if you can't find street parking nearby.

Promptly at 8:30 a.m. we will leave the island and circumnavigate Echo Park Lake, turning left three times in succession at Glendale Blvd., Bellevue Avenue and Echo Park Avenue.  Late arrivals can meet us near the boathouse about 8:50 when we cross Echo Park Avenue and start up Laguna Avenue.

There are public restrooms near the bridge to the island and also near the boathouse.  There won't be any official restroom stops until we return to our starting point between 10:30 and 11.  (Watering the shrubbery in Elysian Park doesn't count.)

We will ascend a couple of public stairways in Echo Park before picking up the trail along the western edge of Elysian Park for about a mile.  We descend the Baxter Stairs from Elysian Heights to Echo Park and return to the lake through a mix of residential and commercial neighborhoods along Echo Park Avenue.

My mobile number is [masked].

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. This was great fun. It was nice to see how Echo Park Lake has come back. All this and a Lotus Festival, too! Thank you, Tuck.

I pulled a muscle on a hike last night and I was hoping a night's rest would be enough, but it's still a problem. Sorry to be cancelling this late, but I just can't hike today.

The Lotus festival is on Sunday. Do you think there will be parking available? I am hoping that I can find parking before the meeting time.

The festival starts at noon. We'll finish the hike before 11 a.m.

Yes, I am on the wait list and would definitely be able to go if my RSVP is changed to "Yes". I would love to do this hike.

There always are last-minute dropouts. If you will be able to join us Sunday morning, should your RSVP be changed to "yes" by Saturday late afternoon, post a note to that effect.

If had known about the Lotus Festival I would have picked another date . . . that said, the event does not start until noon, by which time we will have finished the hike.

There is a nice, small, Chinese restaurant 2 blocks from Echo Park on the corner of Montana and Echo Park. Let's do lunch there after the hike.

You mention two dogs; do I gather that we can bring a dog on leash?

    July 4, 2014

    • Tuck

Well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.
