Queen Mary - Bike Ride

  • Dec 9, 2012 · 7:30 AM

Queen Mary Roll

A bike ride that ends at a cool-breezy coastal community and rolls through parts of the cities we hardly ever see. You may be surprised by a place or thing you spot on the 25-mile or 42-mile ride (details below). Plus it feels good being outside pedaling with a few fellow riders, having a nice time, and taking in some sun rays on the way towards the coast. When the Queen Mary comes into view all of your pedal-power effort will be worth it!

This should not be your first ride. Please read all the details.

The bike ride is not for beginner riders because of the distance (25-miles or 42-miles), the pace (10-12 mph), and the many small hills on the second section of the L.A. River Bike Path. If you're a beginner rider join us on a weekday ride first.
Weekday Rides: THURS, 19 miles to 26 & usually includes shorter ride option 6 miles to 11 miles. Those rides are good for figuring out your riding level & for asking bike/riding questions.

Ride Details:
This bike ride is for Intermediate to Advance level riders. It is a fun ride but the more miles you pedal the more difficult the ride (options below). The route will mainly be on bike paths, bike lanes and along bike friendly streets. No Rider Left Behind. However, riders should be able to maintain a 10 mph pace from point-to-point. Riders in the mood for a little extra pedal-power are encouraged to do sprints along the route.

(Mentioned your option when you RSVP)
Option #1:42-miles NoHo to Long Beach: Intended for Advance level riders. The goal will be to arrive at Union Station around 9 AM. At Union Station (mile 17) we'll meet up with the riders that are starting there. You must able to maintain a 12-mph average from point-to-point. Be ready to roll from the front of the NoHo post office by 7:45 AM promptly.
NoHo to Union Station (CLICK HERE for route)

Option #2: 25-miles Union Station to Long Beach: Intended for Intermediate level riders. Be ready to roll from the front of Union Station at 9:10 AM* The goal will be to arrive at the Shoreline Aquatic Park by 12 PM. Union Station to Long Beach (CLICK HERE for route)

*This requires timing. If the group starting from NoHo encounters any delays the group starting at Union Station will need to be accommodating. I will try to post a comment if there are any long delays.

The section from NoHo to Union Station is rather flat. The section from Union Station to Long Beach is also mostly flat but the bike path goes under many streets so there are several small hills.

Regroups/breaks/bathrooms: Union Station (mile 17), Ralph C. Dills Park (mile 32) and Shoreline Aquatic Park (mile 42). Stops may be altered depending on the group's pace/need.

At the end of the ride we'll relax for several minutes, take it all in, snap some pictures, grab a bite to eat (optional, pack a lunch if you prefer).

We're taking the Blue Line train from L.B. to 7th St/Metro Station; from that station we'll transfer to the Red Line to Union Station or the NoHo Station. The cost is $3 dollars & an additional $1.50 if you don't have a Metro card.

If your name is on the "I'm Going" list & you cannot make it please change status to "Not Attending". Thank you in advance.

Times, Locations, Directions & Parking:
Option #1: NoHo post office - start gathering in front by 7:30 AM & Roll at 7:45 AM

NoHo post office directions - (CLICK HERE)
Parking on Chandler & other nearby streets; check posted signs. There's a Metro parking lot too and that's ultimately where we exit the train.

Option #2: Union Station - start gathering in front by 9 AM & ready to roll by 9:10 AM

Union Station directions - (CLICK HERE)
Best to take a train there. You may be lucky and find parking nearby; check posted signs. There are also flat rate parking lots.

Recommend:

Great bike ride with a great group of cyclists! Definitely recommend Lou's rides and hikes. :))

  • Lou

Such an impressive group! Surprising how many rode back to Union Station. Kudos to all of you! Stein, your complete ride must had been fantastic. Ceci & Rudy, congratulations for doing your longest ride yet, 82 miles & 94 miles respectively, awesome! Always nice to see new faces. All around fun ride with a nice group of people, thanks gang!

Yes, it was a great ride and group. I was surprised as well at how many decided to ride back. Clearly they're up for challenges. Good job everyone. My ride was great but quite a bit of climbing in the direction I went. I plan on setting up a shorter ride in reverse with more downhill than uphill. Hope you can join me for that one. The scenery and views along Mulholland are great.

Thank you Lou, it was fun going round trip this time and seeing that most of the group stayed together through Union Station. You do not see turn outs like yours on other sites, proving LA Hiking and the Fun Rides are the best. Great seeing everyone back.

That extra 5 miles does count. Excuse me for shorting your accomplishment. It was 89 miles! Amazing! I must had still been feeling the effects of the "dark, cold, hungry, headache" when I posted. Now I know what 89 feels like and next time the century is going down. ;) Kudos to you!

With these postings, you just make me more jealous about what a "pleasure" ride I missed :) Almost 100 miles, Ceci, you are a great lady rider, Lou with those tires, you did more than 100+++ miles equivalent bike ride!

Thanks Stein! Glad you enjoyed a new route. Thank you for the hike on Saturday; it was a pleasant 8-mile loop.

    Awesome ride!

Hmm, looks like I am in Ventura. Must have missed a turn somewhere. Can anyone come pick me up? J/K, no, but it was "heck of a ride". Rode west on Anaheim St. and around all of Palos Verdes, then up the coast to north of Santa Monica, headed east on San Vicente, then up Sepulveda to Skirball and then onto Mulholland. Followed Mulholland to Highland and then back down to Los Feliz. I estimate about 110 miles or so as my GPS battery ran out unfortunately. My legs sure got a workout with all the climbing but it was a great ride and very scenic. It actually got dark before I got home so good thing I brought my lights.

      December 9, 2012

    • Lou

Kudos Stein! That's impressive. Ceci, Rudy, & I rode back to the valley; Rudy topped out at around 94 miles & Ceci & I at 82. ..

Anyone riding back to union station. Is the path the same as going?

    December 5, 2012

    • Mark (.

Yes Tim, a few, including me, ehem! as a RT expert, I will take the same path on my return, unless if there is another motivating route suggestion.

      December 5, 2012

    • Stein

Mark, you should join me up along the coast. I'll give you a workout for sure and the scenery is great. Both Palos Verdes and Mulholland are great rides.

Oops! My fault, A last minute invite to a very small group from Thursdays fun rides.

      December 5, 2012

    • Mark (.

I see! I am not in the fast bike riders list :) OK, I will try to attend Thursday rides time to time, just wanna be in the circle ;)

I live in long beach, but would like to join the group from near the blue line wardlow station on bike path. any idea what time you would be there?

    November 25, 2012

    • Lou

I can't give an exact time because it will depend on the overall group's pace, how long we break for, whether there are any delays (fixes, etc.). The Wardlow Station is about 20-miles from Union Station so it may be between 2 to 2-1/2 hour after we leave Union. But the variables will determine the time. Since Wardlow is 5-miles from L.B. you may enjoy doing a ride regardless.

      November 28, 2012

  • Ceci

Mark, sssh! I think that's the bonus ride. Lou was the the peddle till we can't peddle no more ride?

Aahhh, ok. I thought Mark wanted to include Balboa Island...

      November 26, 2012

    • Mark (.

Ceci, I hear you, you refer Lou for pedaling for a long day ride. I also want you to participate all motivating competitions, at least back to the Union station. I am also OK with circling around Balboa lake as XXL bonus after the ride, let's make it 100 miles if we can. For Balboa island ride, I would like to have another fun bike day, was sorry to miss the last ride.
