Gauging Interest in a Dungeons and Dragons Mentzer Basic game for new people

  • Jan 19, 2014 · 12:00 PM

Greetings Everyone,

I'm gauging player interest in participating in a Dungeons and Dragons game using the original Mentzer Basic/Expert rules. These are the rules that I grew up playing and running long ago in a time we called the Eighties and I'd like to introduce a new generation to them. They run from level 1 all the way to level 36 so the characters will become very powerful over time but that's way down the road.

The rules are fairly simple to start off but gain in complexity over time and experience.

I'm looking for people that are fairly new to table top role playing games, if you've never played any this is your chance to jump in and experience it first hand. Anyone that signs up should be 21 years of age or older; the games I run have some adult themes to them. While they aren't gross or overt they do sometimes hit on some touchy subjects that may not be suitable for younger players.

IF this post generates enough interest the actual game will run on Saturdays (the only day I have free right now) from 12PM or 1PM until about 5PM or 6PM depending on what we are trying to accomplish that day.

Please feel free to leave questions in the comment section and I'll get to them within 24 hours or less.

Please note that this is NOT an actual meet-up but just a posting to determine interest. If there is enough interest I'll set up a new posting with an actual location and time to play. Sorry if this wasn't clear before.

Just to let everyone know I'll have about 4 copies of the Basic Player's book to use at the table. Anyone that needs a copy please let me know and I'll print it out for you.

I have played 4th and 3.5 before, it has been a while but I am interested.

Hey Sam, Gary is right if you're looking to play something from the newer editions you might want to check out his group, they perpetually need new players. If you want to play something from the old school be sure to let me know. Thanks for the interest bud.

Or, rather, we are perpetually making new groups. There is another group that is starting up next Tuesday if you want in as well as an open game on Sundays.

I'm definitely not a new RPGer but I would like to at least come and hang out if you don't end up having room for a spot for me at table. I could help with some of the logistics if you truly get all brand new players (and play if you have a spot for me).

Conflict in interests? I don't see how having people who have RPed in other systems before makes it a distraction either, but good luck with your games all the same.

Are we starting this Sunday at noon? That is the date on the site. Do we have enough people to begin?

Hey Robert, as the original posting indicates "Please note that this is NOT an actual meet-up but just a posting to determine interest. If there is enough interest I'll set up a new posting with an actual location and time to play. Sorry if this wasn't clear before". So that's not changed buddy. It seems that there is enough interest in the game for me to get started on game ideas, and I'll set up a new meet-up sign-up posting soon. I hope that helps.

What should we bring though? I'm sadly ignorant to all lore and rules of D&D

Hey John, all you really need to play Dungeons and Dragons is Paper, something to write with and a set of dice. As for the dice I suggest a 4 sided, four 6 sided, one 8 sided, one 10 sided, one 12 sided and at least two 20 sided dice. Oh, and you need an active imagination and willingness to cooperate with your fellow gamers to make sure that everyone has fun. You can get the dice at any local hobby shop or online. Other than that you should be fine if you have those things.

    Hi,

It's been awhile since I played table top gaming, and I have never played D&D with the Mentzer Basic/Expert rules. If that counts, let me know. I would be interested.

That's fine. I'm just looking for people that haven't played this game before or are new to RPGs in general. It'd be great to have you.

Say Kimberly I was looking at your profile and it says you've been playing since the 80s? I'm going to have to put you on the alternative list, sorry. But fair is fair, if I do it to MikeD I have to be consistent.

Hi. My friend, Shanni, and I are interested. How often would this game be? Once or twice a month?
    Thanks

How many people are we shooting for?

I'm shooting for about 10 players. So when half of them drop out mysteriously we still have a group. :D

Saturdays aren't good for me until after 2 pm. If the time moves or the day moves, let me know!

After 2 works for me a little better too, but I'm in regardless

I would have no problem volunteering my house. Also I use to play MTG at comic book world so I would be willing to ask the owner if we could play there. Just a couple suggestions.

      Yes

I'd be interested in playing. Any ideas on a location yet?

      Hey Mike,
The location depends on how much interest there is for this game. If I have enough people that want to play I'll see if someone wants to volunteer their house; If not we'll play at a public venue. It's always good to have people express an interest in the meet up but as the description indicates this is for people new to table top role playing games and you already seem to have a lot of experience buddy. I'll keep you as an alternate if there we are light on players.

Sounds good. Most of my experience has been in 3.5e, my only foray into the older editions was a custom oriental module for AD&D. Don't exactly remember, it was a long time ago, but I don't think the standard player classes were even an option.
