Split Mountain 14,058 via the North Ridge
SPLIT MOUNTAIN (http://www.summitpost.org/split-mountain/150493) is a solitary and difficult to obtain Fourteener with a Class 2/3 scramble on the North Slope (http://www.summitpost.org/north-slope-from-the-east/155680). Many folks have this one on their list since it is one of only 15 Fourteeners in CA. The mountain is a bit elusive but the views are amazing. Come join us to climb it this year with the club!
Maximum 8 climbers. RSVPs open Wednesday July 3, 2013 at 8:00 pm
How RSVPs work: Prospective members who have joined on Meetup but not yet paid for any membership may attend one event for free. Beyond this, you must be a current official SMG "MEMBER" to attend. All events open for RSVPs at 8:00pm on the Wednesday approximately three weeks prior. RSVPs are first-come first-served and are subject to event organizer review and final approval. All attendees must meet the pre-requisites. Prospective members will still need to sign the SMG Waiver / Assumption of Risk (http://files.meetup.com/1532192/SMG%20Waiver.pdf) and provide emergency contact information to attend. Please provide the required information when you RSVP. Because this event occurs on public lands it is open to the public.

Sunday, July 28: Our group will meet in Big Pine, CA at 7:45 am. Here we will consolidate ourselves and our gear into cars capable of driving the rough road to the Red Lake trailhead. We will hike to Red Lake and set up our camp for the night. The trail is challenging and hard to follow at places. Bring a good map and be prepared for rough terrain and some bushwhacking. Red Lake has some good sites for small tents close to the start of the route.
Monday, July 29: Getting an early start (5 am) we will head from our camp site by Red Lake to the North Ridge of Split mountain. Expect the possibility of firm snow, and a fair degree of talus and steepening, loose slopes. Just before you get to the north ridge there are some sections of Class 3 scrambling among loose boulders and dirt. This will top out on the NE ridge which is a long talus climb to the top. We'll summit the mountain and enjoy the view! We'll return to camp and then continue the descent back to our cars at the trailhead.
