NOTE - due to a scheduling conflict, we will have to do this as a 2-day climb. This is an unofficial, exploratory trip.

Day 1 – Starting from Bunny Flat trailhead (6,800), we will hike to Hidden Valley (http://www.summitpost.org/shastina-with-route/719527/c-151251) (9,250) and camp there.

Day 2 – We will leave camp very early and climb either Lightning Couloir (http://www.summitpost.org/lightning-couloir/719526) or Cascade Gulch (http://www.summitpost.org/cascade-gulch/159272) route to the Shastina-Shasta saddle. We will summit Shastina (12,330) and explore the unique scenery of the Shastina Crater (http://www.summitpost.org/shastina-crater-panorama/764815), including several glacial lakes (http://www.summitpost.org/lake-11980-on-shastina/763170) and rock formations (http://www.summitpost.org/fulgurites/764813) created by lightning strikes. We will then continue on to summit Shasta either by crossing Whitney Glacier near or above the bergshrund (http://www.summitpost.org/the-traverse-over-the-whitney-glacier-bergschrund-on-the-cascade-gulch-route/800042) or by following the rocky upper portions of the west ridge. From the summit, we will descend the West Face of Shasta back to our camp, pack up, and go home.

This is a difficult trip requiring good fitness. The technical crux (http://www.summitpost.org/the-beginning-of-the-traverse-above-the-whitney-glacier-bergschrund/800036) is traversing a narrow 50+ degree snow and ice slope above the gaping Whitney Glacier bergshrund (http://www.summitpost.org/whitney-glacier-blue-ice/396293/c-206047), climbing crumbly 4+ class rock in crampons, or crossing the active upper icefall of the Whitney Glacier, depending on the route we decide to take. We will carry enough gear to protect these sections if needed. This is an unofficial, exploratory trip. Participation in this trip is subject to Event Host’s approval - either I've climbed with you already, or you can cite comparable past experience that will make me feel good. I am sorry but I have to be conservative on this one. Please RSVP to the waitlist if interested, and email the Event Host with some details of your past experience and training.

Technical gear: second tool, light ropes, snow pickets, ice screws, crevasse rescue gear.
Camping gear: snow shovels, 4-season tents, cold-weather sleeping gear, enough fuel to melt snow.
It is assumed that participants know how to equip themselves for this type of climb.
