>>  Jan. 23 - 24 | Feb. 20 - 21 | Feb. 27 - 28 | March 19 - 20April 2 - 3 <<

Please note: These are the ONLY dates in 2016 the club can offer this important and popular training course. Registration is first-come, first serve - please register ASAP.

MTN 2: Snow Camping & Winter Mountaineering is the club's intermediate level mountaineering course preparing members for winter camping, travel and climbing. Course completion better qualifies you to attend club climbs that require MTN 2 skills. With a full 16 hours of focused instruction on the mountain, you'll get a solid understanding of the skills and know-how you'll need to venture higher.

We'll go in depth with snow shelters including caves, quinzhees, hybrid shelter and tents, winter mountaineering gear, clothing and equipment, review prior navigation techniques, winter backcountry travel skills, advanced map and compass navigation in winter or on glaciers, obtaining water, cooking, and other elements of winter / high altitude basecamp living. All of this will take place on a winter overnight on the mountain in realistic conditions, with the goal of a summit of a nearby peak in the Eastern Sierra near Bishop. Sierra Mountain Guides will provide an AMGA certified instructor in partnership with SMC.

  • Minimum 4, maximum 12, first- come, first-serve.
  • Registration for this 2 day course is $360.
  • Held in the Eastern Sierra, in partnership with Sierra Mountain Guides
  • Prior backpacking / camping experience recommended
  • For SMC paid members only. Not a member? Join SMC here.

Check out these pictures from prior MTN 2 training. Here's a video from a winter ascent that gives you a taste.
