Hello everyone, all Mountaineering Level One (MTN 1) Online Training Events and Free Training dates are now live and registering. The MTN 1 Online Training better qualifies you to attend any of the MTN 3 Free Training dates and all club climbs and expeditions that are at the MTN 1 level. All are listed on the official SMC website:

MTN 1 Online Training Now Registering (first come first serve): May 18th | June 8th |  June 22nd |  July 21st |  August 31st |  October 12th

MTN 1 Free Training events help members prepare for basic mountain climbing and any MTN 1 climbing events or expeditions. Priority will be given to those who attend the MTN 1 online training. Please join the interest list:

MTN 1 Free Training Dates: May 28-29 |  June 25-26 |  July 16-17 |  August 20-21 | September 17-18 |  October 29-30 |  November 26-27

Mountaineering Level One is SMC's premier mountaineering course,  providing the foundation for alpine climbing. The 1.5 hour online training will introduce the skills and know-how we'll be using on any of the free MTN 1 training dates.

MTN 1 is:

  • Mountain camping and travel
  • Map and compass navigation and route finding
  • Rock scrambling
  • Moving through terrain with loose rock
  • Spotting and short belays
  • Climbing easy fixed lines
  • Rappelling or lowering
  • Mountaineering knots
  • Overview of mountaineering equipment, clothing and gear
