The Eleventh 'Essential'

Do you lay out your gear systematically before every outing, checking to make sure you have everything you need, nothing that's unnecessary? Depending on the objective, the gear changes, but the 10 essentials are the core of your system - every time.

That core gear is meant to be the stuff that will keep you alive in an emergency, but it's just 'stuff'. When it comes down to it, it's really what you do in an emergency that'll impact the outcome. So in reality there's an 11th 'essential': skill.

Whatever you're doing out there - climbing, skiing, backpacking - you're likely doing it within your skill level, so you can survive and make it home to play again. You learned to read a map, treat your water, protect yourself from the elements. What will you do if there's a medical emergency? Do you know the difference between a bump on the head and a potentially life-threatening cerebral bleed?

Wilderness First Aid is an essential piece of gear for anyone who plays outside the city limits.  If your activity takes you more than an hour away from professional medical care, it'll be up to you to act in an emergency. What will you do?

It's time to update your gear.
