NOW THEN, if I could just get software to remove hiss, pops and crackles
in digital recordings of analog media AND to cut out tracks (or clips)
from longer pieces of audio.

As the kind of guy who's ready to go to a little trouble rather than
spend some money, I'll be downloading and installing Soundflower. But I
must admit, the commercial software looks great and is quite inexpensive.
