Becoming a Consultant –Venturing Out on Your Own
Many developers, new and experienced, dream of getting out and venturing into the world of freelance and working for themselves. This talk explores how to move from working in the office to a consultant role in the world of freelance as well as working with companies geared towards arranging contract positions. Focuses will be on how to overcome the initial hesitation, advantages and disadvantages of freelance vs contract roles, and supporting a freelance career through setting consulting rates, legal documents, how to make a living salary, the business side of things, and much more. This talk is aimed towards all levels of developers from all walks of life. Speaker Alex is an experienced web and software developer with over 10 years experience in the industry ranging from small to large applications and all walks of web. He has worked on various forms of academic projects, self-funded ventures, freelance, and large team projects for large companies. A exploring of all things nerdy and geeky, Alex enjoys showcasing what he knows with others and tries to bridge the gaps between technical and non-technical knowledge in all areas of engineering. Alex is currently working as a Senior QA Automation Engineer at Sony in Middleton, WI.
