August Permablitz

Join us for the next installment of our amazing permablitz season!  On Sunday August 25th we'll be convening at Malory, Michael and Morgyn's place in Portland for the day.

Permablitzes are day-long work parties that put permaculture design into action! Imagine more than twenty permaculture folks working side-by-side for six hours resulting in more than 180 labor hours completed in one day, great fun, conversation, and camaraderie as well as experiential learning for all!

Our hosts:  Morgyn has been a part of the permaculture community for years both here and in Florida.  She, along with Malory and Michael Shaughnessy, hosted one of our Intro to Permaculture Design short courses last winter which spurred them on to some great design ideas of their own.  This will be a great example of what's possible in a rental situation, since permaculture is not something reserved for only those who own property; in fact far from it!

Click here to learn more about permablitzing.

This is part of a series of permablitzes in and around Portland in 2013.  Taking part in these events is one of the best ways to "put your name in the hat" for permablitzes at your own place in the future!

Work projects and teams to be announced based on the permaculture design for this site, but here's a preliminary agenda for planning purposes.

  • 9:00 Gather for coffee/tea (provided), introductions and a briefing on the plan for the day
  • 9:30 Review of Permaculture Design Principles and the design elements for this property
  • 10:00 Break into teams and work on projects
  • 12:30 Potluck Lunch (vegetarian main dish provided by host; bring something to compliment)
  • 1:00 Resume work
  • 3:30 Check-in & prioritize final hour / clean-up

What to bring:

notebook/camera, work gloves, boots, clothes that can get a bit dirty (and dress in layers for varying temperatures through the course of the day), potluck dish to share and “kit” (dish/bowl/utensils/napkins), water bottle, sunscreen, etc.

I am so sad to miss this occasion, as the Shaughnessy some of my favorite people! We have even talked about doing this before it was a blitz. Alas, I have to tend to some personal matters last minute.

Heather did just a fabulous job organizing this, as did the individual project organizers. Enjoyed scythe demonstration and sharpening, practice with a power tool, making terraced raised beds, creative problem solving, seeing completed chicken tractor and water system, lots of great new people, plus rare live redwood tree.

I am very much looking forward to this group but I cannot attend tomorrow, unfortunately. My moving van from Ann Arbor came this afternoon. Omg. I have a full house to unpack! Good luck to you. Good luck to me! Hope it's a wonderful day.

I just realized I'm officially moving that day, so I probably won't be able to attend all day...but I may drop by and lend a hand if I finish up my move fast enough!

This will be my first time, just wondering if it will be okay, being a newbie! I'll also need directions but I think Prospect St. Is near me, please let me know and I may be a little nervous.
    Thank you,
    Jacquelyn

Hi Jacquelyn, Being a newbie is awesome! It will be great to have you there. Prospect St is right off of Deering Avenue (turn left onto Prospect if you are heading toward downtown). We in the same neighborhood as The Great Lost Bear and Mister Bagel.
