POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN - new date to be announced shortly.
Please join us for a special midsummer evening field trip to Portserfield Cider in Pownal, Maine. David Buchanan has been working on selecting and growing a wide range of fruit for hard cider and other uses over the years. You may be familiar with his Portersfield Cider (sold through the Portland Food Coop, for example) or from his smoothie stand at the farmers market in Deering Oaks.
On this field trip we will take a walk around the farm and learn about the varieties of fruits in production, including over 200 varieties of apples on a range of different rootstocks, plus dozens of other tree fruits and berries ranging from cider pears to elderberries. David's focus is to grow these crops ecologically with minimal chemical inputs. We will get a chance to finish with a session in the tasting room! Anyone interested in home fruit production or tree crops in general will appreciate this event.
Space is limited. $5 to hold your spot. If you would like to carpool, please use the comments area below to offer or request a lift. We will start the tour at Portersfield at 6:00 so please plan to arrive a few minutes before that to park, etc.
David is also the author of Taste, Memory: Forgotten Foods, Lost Flavors and Why They Matter. https://www.chelseagreen.com/taste-memory
