How did you find this particular group? (word of mouth? internet? etc.)

Browsing Meet-up for people and places that will get me better acquainted with the area and keep me busy.

What interests you about this particular group?

My husband (a busy med-student) and I have been trying to make the most of our tiny apartment garden, and want to learn more about what works in this climate. In addition, one of our best wedding gifts was an offer from a friend to design and implement a permaculture garden for us when we find our forever home. While that's still a number of years away, we both enjoy exploring new concepts and learning more. Browsing recent events, I liked the variety that you offer, and look forward to the opportunity to participate in different things. I also hoped I might possibly find a few bike commuters who might offer support as the weather changes with the seasons - I managed to commute year round in Rochester NY by bike, but get the feeling from my new coworkers that that might be considered completely insane here.

Are you living/gardening/growing predominantly in an urban, suburban or rural setting?

Definitely urban. We have a ground floor apartment in the city of Portland. We share the small garden space with our upstairs neighbours. Having only moved in late this Spring, we never optimised our use of the space. We did enjoy many yummy tomatoes, but lost our beans and greens to our resident skunk (we think). We haven't started composting here yet, and look forward to picking group members brains about the best way to do that given the climate. (In Rochester NY we resorted to an indoor composter during the Winter months rather than dig out several feet of snow regularly. We know the snow is less here, but the weather is colder - what works best in a small space?)

I'm a recent British import to Portland, happy to be by the ocean again after a few years in Western NY. Looking forward to exploring the area (the city and the great outdoors), and to meeting new folks.
