Part-Time Farm Assistant, Kennebec Valley Community College

(2 Positions Available)

Up to 20 hours per week

The Kennebec Valley Community College Farm is located on 120 acres of prime agricultural land at the center of the college’s new Harold Alfond Campus in Hinckley, Maine. The former pasture-based dairy is being converted into a four-season educational farm producing mixed vegetables, fruits, livestock, and other specialty crops using innovative and sustainable practices. The farm will provide an outdoor lab for the academic program in Sustainable Agriculture and also host community workshops and events.

Position Description and Responsibilities

We are seeking reliable, mature, and enthusiastic individuals motivated by a strong interest in sustainable agriculture to join our farm crew. With the direction and support of the Farm Manager, part-time Farm Assistants will assist with day-to-day management of farm operations and crop production, site development and maintenance, community engagement, and program planning. Work schedules and responsibilities will shift seasonally and as program needs dictate.

Successful applicants will be hardworking and creative problem-solvers, able to do fast-paced, detail-oriented work, love to be outside, and not mind getting dirty. Applicants should be able to sustain focus through repetitive tasks, work outside in all weather conditions, and have the ability to work well independently as well as in a group. Good communication skills, accountability, teamwork, flexibility, and a sense of humor are critical. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds repetitively, operate power tools, and have a valid driver’s license.

In addition to previous agricultural experience, a successful candidate will have a range of supporting skills and interests that could include place-based education, program development, construction, mechanics, livestock management, communications, marketing, or other relevant areas.

This is a part-time, contract position (up to 20 hours per week) with an hourly wage of $15/hr.
