Make:SF @ TechShop SF July 9th - DIY LED Lamp

Hello Makers,
Time to light up your life! This month we'll be making an 18" LED lamp with two rows of 30 bright white LEDs (60 in total). It's hard to describe how bright these are except that it's too bright to stare directly at them… Which is why we are including a dimmer and diffuser.

The workshop includes: (see photos)
19.5" of LED strip light (60 LEDs) with a "pig tail" to plug in to (soldering required)
19.5" of 90 degree aluminum extrusion with a 1/4 round opal matte diffuser with end caps (designed for LEDs)
24V 1A power supply
24V DC dimmer

And some materials to make your own stand… or you could use it as super bright under cabinet lighting, mount it to a wall, etc. It's a super fun and functional project. The soldering is just two spots, so we'll spend most of our time assembling and inventing cool lamp stands to hold the light. (It's electrical, but not electronic, so no Arduino or programming required this month.)

The workshop will be only $35 which includes materials, supplies, and instruction. Feel free to bring lamp stand parts you might want to experiment with.

And, we want to see the cool stuff you all are doing! So email us if you have something you want to show off and we will arrange a demo.
See you there!

Shh! Quit talking about how great Make:SF is!

The July project has been incredibly handy in the house already! We use our lamp every day and we will take it camping. I want one for every room in the house! Thank You Andrew M for creating this project and bringing it to us!

(I think this is the point Make SF should go underground so the monthly meetups don't get so full that we can't get in anymore.)

You'll just have to teach one! I don't think knowledge should ever not be shared.

This is a great lamp for use camping or on a boat as you can plug it in when possible or switch over to a battery pack if you chose to make one.. Nice touch adding the dimmer strip too.

Oh... Sorry I missed last nights event. I have an awesome idea for a light but not sure where to start. I hope to make it next time.

I assume it's okay that my engineering experience is equal to zero?

If you can plug in a lamp or screw in a lightbulb you are already over qualified! (Half kidding... The engineering portion is really just for discussion, this is one of our easier kits to assemble.)

J will be there to do the project and I will be there watching, so I think we count officially as one person when it comes to an RSVP. Our friends are joining us there - they already have rsvp'd so that's good!

Here are some photos to give you an idea of the parts:

It's very even light, so that should work well for crochet. As far as bases go... I thought of four main types:

    - Hang from the ceiling
    - Mount on the wall, or in a corner
    - Heavy base with the "wand" sticking out
or, an idea I had that might be most relevant to you...
    - a saw horse shape, where the lamp would point down from the middle...
    - or the lamp could be one leg of a tripod!

The nice think is that its basically a sturdy tube that's pretty light so the possible configurations are almost limitless. You could also potentially run it off of brick of batteries.
