  • Learn how to follow a commercial sewing pattern and make up a half circle skirt in a day. Our intermediate class will help you understand how to use a pattern, from selecting the correct size to laying out your pattern pieces and fabric, understanding terminology and how to follow the instructions to make up a half circle skirt including inserting a zip. You'll leave with a better understanding of using commercial patterns, so you can select and sew your own at home.

    Who is this class for?
This class is for those with some sewing experience. You must be confident using the sewing machine, threading up and sewing in a straight line with some simple projects under your belt but no previous experience using patterns is needed. You will leave with the confidence and knowledge to understand how to select and use commercial patterns at home.

    What we will cover:

    •  How to correctly measure yourself and choose the right pattern size for your measurements

    •  Minor adjustments if you are between sizes

    •  Cutting a paper pattern out correctly

    •  Laying fabric out correctly, understanding the straight grain and being economical with your fabric

    •  Pinning your pattern onto fabric following grain lines and markings

    •  How to go about cutting out your fabric

    •  How to follow the pattern instructions for your chosen style

    •  What the markings and sewing terms mean

    •  Applying interfacing

    •  Attaching a waistband yoke and facing

    •  Inserting a concealed zip

    •  Hemming and finishing

You will make up a skirt from a Simplicity pattern, including inserting a waistband and a zip and leave with a finished garment. This pattern fits up to a size 18 but it can be graded up to 2 sizes larger. If you are above a size 22, please get in touch before booking. The price includes a pattern to take home with several variations on the style we will make up in class including a full circle skirt and styles with pockets. We will stop for a 30 minute lunch break (it is recommended you bring your own lunch). Tea and biscuits will be available throughout.

This class includes a place on the Goldhawk Road Fabric Shops Tour where you can purchase the fabric and materials needed for this workshop. After booking you will be asked for your tour time slot preference and automatically added to that event within 24 hours. Please note we will try and accommodate your preference, however this is subject to availability.

    What to bring:
For this project you will need to buy 2 metres of medium weight cotton fabric (45" / 115cm wide) 3 metres if the width is any less, a 7" normal (not invisible) zip, plus a reel of polyester thread to match your fabric. Once booked we will contact you with full details 7 days before the class. All other materials and equipment will be provided. We recommend you bring your own lunch as we will only take a short 30 minute lunch break. Alternatively there are lots of food places in Shepherd's Bush.

    Class size:
Our maximum class size will be 4 people. This means lots of one-to-one time and a chance to get to know everyone in the group and share the experience in a relaxed environment.

    About the teacher:

Daisy's sewing journey has had a strong focus on refashioning, mending and altering. Whilst studying fashion design, she has gained skills in dressmaking, pattern cutting and is always looking at ways to transform or repair existing garments. She loves sharing her skills with others and seeing their creativity flourish. Daisy teaches weekly classes with Open Age, a charity providing activities for over 50's and has lots of experience in working with people of varying skill levels.

    Venue:
We have a lovely space at the Petit Miracle Hub in Shepherds Bush based upstairs in the West 12 Shopping Centre. Just 2 minutes from Shepherds Bush Central Line and Overground (across from Westfield shopping Centre.)

    PLEASE NOTE:
Due to the nature of our classes, once booked, our classes are non-refundable. If you are unable to make it you can send someone in your place. Just email us with the person's name and contact email. If you inform us no less than 2 weeks before the class and we are able to fill your place, if there is space we will transfer you to the next class date.
