Learn to Play Mahjong, Go, and Chinese Chess for Chinese New Year

Dear members,

To respond to this popular demand, I am helping to organize this event for Chinese New Year. Playing Mahjong is one of the most popular entertainment in China and especially around the Chinese New Year time.

I can only bring one Mahjong set, those who have Mahjong sets at home, please bring them along. If there are not enough sets, we can take turns and some people can watch first. Some table cloths also help to reduce the noise.

I will also bring other board games, including a go game, a Chinese Chess and some other ones I might come up with later.

We will set up 5-6 tables for the games, and one extra for foods and drinks. This will also be a potluck evening, bring finger foods to share with people, and I will provide soft drinks and paper cups.

Let's have fun and celebrate the new year!

Just a friendly reminder: although it is a new year celebration event/party, alcohol is not allowed on BCIT property. You can bring in snacks and soft drinks. I am sure we can still have a lot of fun.

Gerrie

lost one hand, help win another. Wanted to learn this game for a long time. Has been very educational since the Confucius Institute amalgamated with this group.

Thank you Gerrie for providing us the space for this event! Gerrie and I will bring a MJ set each, and additional sets are welcomed, but you're arriving late or taking transit, then I don't think the extra luggage is necessary. Feel free to bring Chinese Chess and Go sets.

I'll be spending the night demonstrating how a typical MJ game is played, with a light mix of strategies depending on the progress. If you want to do some preparation work, go google on how the MJ tiles look like and what they represent (ie. what the Chinese words on the tiles mean).

Let's all bring some snacks to share, considering the hospitality that Gerrie has given us. See you there!

Thanks John for organizing the event. To add on the list of things to bring, I recommend some table cloths to reduce the noise of tiles. I will bring some, but they might not be enough. More are welcome.

Since someone brought up GO game, we can include that & maybe Chinese Chess too. This way we can make it a table game night instead of just mahjong. Should be fun.

I know this board game place has mahjong:

    3619 kingsway
    Vancouver

Always wanted to learn how to play, but never got a chance to learn it. If someone can explain to me, I would love organize this.

This board game store has bubble tea too:

I believe $12 play whole day with unlimited bbtea

The Kerrisdale Community Centre - Senior Centre side has MJ aka card tables and the room and I think they are open to renting the room at a reasonable costs in the evenings as the seniors don't use the centre, I think they close at 9pm tho.

Quite a few people have brought this up and this is definitely possible, as I have MJ sets and chips, and I know 3 regions of MJ (HK, Jap, Taiwan), but it all comes down to location. We need a private place big enough for people and that can handle the noise of the MJ tiles. We also need proper tables (or at least square shaped table tops). I know restaurants offer MJ, but that's only if you eat from their high-end menus (or else why would they give you free room/time to play?).

If you can settle on a location, I'm pretty sure I can handle the rest.

i've checked into a community center located in the chinatown area in vancouver, they have at least 3 MJ tables but charges $25 per hour for room rental and gambling is not permitted on the premises

      December 20, 2012

  • April

    i'd come and play mj
if i'm free on that day

Good idea, I have been wanting to learn/practice this game for a long time. Some apartment buildings stratas offer party/meeting room for a small nominal fee, however my strata is not that case. ( also, hopefully someone can bring up the idea of learning the game of GO too. :)
