Education Night w/ Kent Porter: A storm chaser with a metal tripod

Kent has been a news photographer since 1981 and started his professional career in 1984 when he began working with the Santa Rosa Press Democrat / New York Times.  Along the way, he developed an eye for making scenic pictures and incorporating that into his photojournalism and storm chasing. In the normally quiet weather region of northern California, he has shot nearly every major storm and has chased storms extensively across the Central Plains, Texas and Arizona.

Kent says his first love is his wife and son and then photography.  He is known for chasing lightning storms with a metal tripod. To see more of his work please visit

It was very inspirational! Growing up in the mid-West, I miss the thunderstorms. Shot some on the plane back from Boston in June during tornado season; however, my iPhone did not do a good job of recording them.

Kent proved himself to be an excellent and extraordinary committed photographer - I came away with the impression that he never sleeps. We have had many presenters who had many different styles and Kent is a person who loves his art and craft and pursues it with great passion. He creates wonderful work and has a wonderful work ethic - he works it until he gets the image and then looks for the next one.

So sorry to have to miss this but I'm already attending a lecture that night. Sigh.

I met Ken a number of times in Santa Rosa. He even took my picture taking a picture of a sunset at the coast. I have heard him speak in a class i took at SRJC and admire him as a hardworking photojournalist.

I met Kent several years ago when the Press Democrat was owned by the New York Times. He is a very talented photographer and I am happy to have him as part of this years speaker series.
