Nature Adventures Speaker Series: Vernal Pools by Mark Tegges

  • Feb 22, 2013 · 7:30 PM
  • Maryland Naturalist Center

As early spring rains fill depressions in the warming earth, many species of amphibians leave their winter hiding places to engage in their spring nuptials. It is a rite of spring that few people know about, and fewer still take the time to observe and photograph this mini-migration to the water. Mark Tegges has been doing just that for most of his life. He will share his understanding of vernal pools and the animals that briefly inhabit them, as well as his spectacular photographs.

This is the first presentation in our new monthly program “Nature Adventures Speaker Series”.  We hope to bring you interesting and exciting outdoor experiences from around Maryland and the world. Look for something new on the fourth Friday of each month at the Maryland Naturalist Center!

Cost: Members $5 each; Non-members $10 each; Cash at the door. We currently cannot accept credit cards. Become a member that evening and get the member discount!

Great program, wonderful and helpful photos and really loved the recordings of different frog calls!!! very special and humorous. My first time attending and I found it great.
Need to attract some youth, I tried to get my 17 year old to come, almost, but didn't in the end. I was glad because I didn't see any other kids his age about some falconry lessons or how to handle venomous snakes, just kidding on the snakes.

It looks like it will not be bad this evening - occasional light rain and in the mid-30s. So we're on! If you are coming a distance, please check the weather in your area and be safe! Hope to see you tonight!

    Hi All.
It looks like we have potential for bad weather on Friday night. We are going to wait and see what happens in the afternoon. By 5:00pm on Friday (2/22) we will make a decision on whether or not to reschedule. So, if you are planning to come to the Vernal Pool talk, please check our website after 5:00pm to make sure it is still on for the evening. You should also get an email if we reschedule. Let's hope for the best!

    Hi Jamie and Heide,
You definitely don't want to miss this event! Mark Tegges is an expert on Maryland reptiles and amphibians and all around naturalist as well. He is an excellent photographer with a great knowledge about our state wildlife. I have known him for years and always learn something new each time we meet. The Natural History Society is so grateful to Mark for his awesome presentations!

Hi Jamie. It will be about an hour long, and we will probably stick around and talk for a while afterwards. Hope to see you there.

Jackie, we do have our monthly Nature Gathering on Sunday afternoon. As we get more impromptu events during the warmer months, will try to offer some on Sunday as well. It all depends on the availability of our volunteer program leaders. Hope to see you soon at one of our events!

I sure wish terrific events like this would be other than Friday nites and/or Saturday. How about Sunday nite?
