Wildflowers, Trees, and Shrubs of Leakin Park

On this walk we'll explore a large urban park in West Baltimore that has high quality deciduous forest.  We expect to see spring wildflowers, and we will also identify trees and shrubs.

Bring:  water, field guides, and a handlens if you have one.

Directions:  Meet at the parking lot on Franklintown Road (not at the nature center).  From I-70, exit onto Security Blvd.  Take the first right onto Franklintown Road.  Drive about 1/2 mile.  The parking lot is on your left.

We'll cancel for heavy rain, not for light drizzle.  If in doubt, call. Contact Dwight:  [masked] or[masked]-8518.

Check here in the event of a weather cancellation.

This walk is sponsored jointly with the Maryland Native Plant Society. Dwight and Kirsten Johnson are experienced and enthusiastic botanists.

I was over an hour late and never found the group. However, I explored on my own this long forgotten park that I used to sled down 60 years ago. I'll be back.

We were over at the park today. There are quite a few spring flowers in bloom (plus with some sad situations that we'll point out). The walk will not be long, but will go uphill on a rough trail. If you don't feel comfortable picking your way among sticks, rocks and fallen leaves, then please cancel. Not to scare anyone - if you're accustomed to woodland hiking, you'll be fine. Wear sturdy shoes. No sandals.

I hope there's no confusion about where to meet. The parking lot on Franklintown Rd is quite visible on googlemaps/satellite view. If you are driving west on North Ave, you turn left on Morris Rd, then right on Franklintown. We are going to scout out the area tomorrow and will post again before Sunday. We do have a lot of registrants, but we also have several who can co-lead: Charlie and Linda Davis of NHSM, Mary Pat Rowan, head of the MNPS DC Chapter, and Baltimore's very own Jodie Landers. Weather forecast looks good.

Also I would love it if it could meet at places that were a bit more pedestrian or bus friendly =)

I'm a park ranger here and I'm always trying to teach myself more about the ecology of this park! This will be really helpful!
