The Chimney Swifts have returned to Overlea! Join the Baltimore Bird Club's Swift Watch Team as we observe the Chimney Swifts enter a favorite chimney at sunset. These agile flyers use the Overlea neighborhood as one stopping point on their migration route, and the Naturalist Center is the perfect place to watch this drama unfold! Come a half hour early if the weather is cloudy or gray. The trip will be cancelled if it's raining.
Last fall people of all ages met at the Maryland Naturalist Center building to watch more than 1,000 Chimney Swifts swirl overhead. The birds gathered from all directions—spiraling into a dark whirlwind—until one by one, they slipped into a nearby chimney to roost for the night. They were on their way to South America in the fall; now they're on their way north again.
