  • This location is shown only to members

Come and meet other members of the Natural History Society at the Maryland Naturalist Center. It's a work in progress, and we would like to share our collections of fossils, minerals, birds, reptiles/amphibians, plants, and insects! We have everything you could find outside, inside! Bring a story, idea, or natural object to share!

See you then.

The people are really friendly and informative, people brought various things to share: there were bird feathers to ID, pine cones, showcases of gorgeous minerals, mammal skulls, moss & microscopes, nature-related music, book collections and snacks.

A guest told me the names of butterflies on display, and how his family raised one species and released the butterflies in a park. Under a microscope, I added a drop of water to dried up moss and saw it spring to life. Great people to talk with.

My wife and I enjoyed meeting everyone and chatting with people we hadn't met before; everyone was very friendly and enthusiastic. We also brought four kids with us, and they fit in well and enjoyed looking at and learning about all of the specimens at the society headquarters.

I was very pleased with the turnout and the mingling was nice. It was very refreshing to talk to many people with similar interests.

Parking Update. The parking lot next to the building has been cleared of snow. The entrance to the lot is on the north side of Belair Road, mid-way between Chesley Avenue and Overlea Avenue. The marker on the above Google map correctly identifies its location. See everyone tomorrow.

Sorry, I will have to work and don't believe I will make it in time since I live and work in the Rockville area.

Parking update. Linda and I went over to the Maryland Naturalist Center project building today and cleared all sidewalks and entrance to the building. Our parking lot, though, still has 9" of snow. You can park directly across the street on the public parking lot. The entrance to lot is directly across from ours - midblock. Park on the church side of the lot; the other portion is private for the pharmacy. Exit from that lot is Willow Ave., which is oneway toward Belair Rd. Look for updates.

We will probably do this again to make up for those who couldn't make it this time around, and as we get more members. And we won't meet at the building every time, we will find other places to go that are fun.
