Night Walk to a Vernal Pool - Baltimore County

Join us at a vernal pool in northern Baltimore County! We will spend the evening searching for critters that leave their comfortable winter hideouts to engage in their spring nuptials. They include Wood Frogs, Spotted Salamanders, Red-spotted Newts, and of course, Spring Peepers. And there are plenty of other species to see at night in the spring. Let's hope for lots of spring rains to fill the vernal pools! We'll meet in the Big Falls Road parking lot just south and west of where the road crosses the Gunpowder River.

Trip Leaders: Nick Spero, Tim Hoen, and Joe McSharry

Price: Free to all, but please give us a donation if you can! If you are not a dues-paying member, please consider becoming one so we can continue offering this kind of nature education:  The leaders are volunteers, so your donation will go directly to support the programs, our building, and our natural history collections.  All proceeds go to the Natural History Society of Maryland.

A few notes:

While we want everyone to have a great experience, we don't want to damage the habitat, and we certainly don't want to hurt the little critters we love so much. So we ask participants not to enter the vernal pools. We will have nets to collect from the edge and aquariums to observe everything we find. Please help us out by listening to the trip leaders!

Dress for the cold, wear shoes/boots that you don't mind getting muddy, and bring a flashlight if you want to search the edges. The pool is close to the road so there is no significant walking involved.

If you are lost, please call Joe at[masked]-5219.

(I don't care what the calendar says, spring starts when the frogs start calling!)

It was a great event listening to the amphibians, seeing them and listening to information about them.

I loved the entire event last night. Breathed some great air, met some wonderful people and communed with some marvelous amphibians (vs reptiles). Thanks so much for your time and sharing about those amazing natural creatures!

    Greetings to all,
Some are concerned about rain during the Vernal Pool Visits. Truth is, it’s all about temperature and moisture when observing and finding the best reptile and amphibian activity! We very much want all the participants to be safe and comfortable. Please dress according to the weather. The parking of vehicles is so close to the site that you can - at any time - grab extra or discard some gear. It’s a wonderful place to watch spring unfold before your eyes! I personally have found just as many reptiles and amphibians in the rain as compared to sunny days. As long as the temperature is above freezing and no strong wind, then the we are in for a terrific evening.
    See you there!

Is it too early (or whimpy) to ask about a rain date? Looks like socked in rain for Saturday.

    Hi Nymbus,
There should be plenty to photograph that night, so bring your camera along. And thank you for helping with the MARA project.
