Short notice trip...
We're going to meet in the Boston area (location to be determined by the general location of the people who sign up) early morning on Saturday, drive north to New Hampshire and climb North and South Kinsman. Getting from the trailhead to the top should take 3.5 or 4 hours and could be done as a dayhike, but because we're adventuresome like that, we're going to camp on the trail overnight instead.
Just down from the peak of North Kinsman is a backcountry campsite at Kinsman Pond, with a shelter and three tent platforms. Having this shelter available for safety's sake gives us the option to decide if we want to use it, or the tent platforms, or use our own gear off trail (allowed, with certain rules, in the White Mountains) depending on the conditions. Safety will be paramount but it will be a good challenge.
Along the way we can talk about aspects of how to take care of yourself if you get caught out and things you can do to prepare yourself for that possibility.
Everyone will be expected to bring a full sleeping system that they trust to a cold night: I expect it to be below freezing at the top of the mountain. At the same time, hiking uphill is hot work, and moisture control will be difficult if you sweat into all of your clothes which are then wet going into the night!
As I'm late getting set up for this one, when you RSVP that you're coming, please let me know where you're coming from so I can figure out the meeting place. Look at the kit list (https://sites.google.com/site/masurvivalcourse2010/course-kit-list) and make sure you have everything on it or can get it easily.
I'm going to limit the group to 8 people because the shelter isn't very big and I don't want to manage a huge group. If this works, though, there will be other hikes.
If you have any questions let me know!
