Description: Hawksbill Mountain Hike (Linville Gorge, NC)

The hike to the summit of Hawksbill Mountain (4,009 ft) is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Southeast. Perched dramatically above Linville Gorge, often called the “Grand Canyon of the East,” the summit delivers sweeping, cliff-edge views straight down into the rugged gorge below.

### What Makes This Hike Special

Despite its relatively short distance, Hawksbill feels big. The final summit is a jagged, exposed rock outcrop that provides nearly 360-degree views. You’ll see:

  • The deep, wild terrain of Linville Gorge
  • Iconic formations like Table Rock Mountain
  • Endless Blue Ridge ridgelines stretching into the distance

On exceptionally clear days, long-distance visibility can extend dozens of miles—though seeing Charlotte is extremely rare and not something to count on.

### Trail Overview

  • Distance: ~1.5 miles round trip (longer option availble) Up and back hike
  • Elevation Gain: ~500–700 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate (short but steep and rocky)
  • Trailhead: Off an unpaved Forest Service road in Pisgah National Forest
  • Bring poles and boots, water, hat sunglasses, good attitude

The hike begins gradually through a mixed hardwood forest, lulling many into thinking it’s easy. After about 0.5 miles, you’ll approach a junction near the Jonas Ridge area—this is where the climb begins to show its teeth.
From here:

  • The trail narrows and becomes rockier
  • The grade steepens significantly
  • Footing can be uneven, especially in wet conditions

Just below the summit ridge, the trail splits:

  • Right fork: Longer, more gradual ascent
  • Left/straight: Shorter but steep, involving a bit of scrambling

Both routes lead to the summit plateau.

### At the Summit

The top of Hawksbill is not a single point but a rocky ridgeline with multiple viewpoints:

  • Right side: Best panoramic views into Linville Gorge
  • Left side: Excellent angle toward Table Rock
  • Center/top: Popular (but exposed) primitive camping spots

Be cautious—there are sheer drop-offs with no guardrails. Wind can also be strong along the ridge.

### Important Tips (Local Insight)

  • Road access matters: The Forest Service road can be rough—high-clearance vehicles are helpful, especially after rain.
  • Crowds: This is one of the most popular hikes in the gorge—go early or on weekdays for a quieter experience.
  • Weather changes fast: Fog and wind can roll in quickly, completely obscuring views.
  • Leave No Trace: The summit area sees heavy use—pack out everything.

### Bottom Line

Hawksbill Mountain is a classic “short but powerful” hike—minimal mileage, maximum payoff. If you want one of the best views in North Carolina without committing to a long trek, this is hard to beat.

Post Hike: Fonta Flora Brewery at Whippoorwill Farm
(this is the reason we hike hard)

Web Site: https://fontaflora.com/location/whippoorwill-farm/

Description : The Whippoorwill Farm property spans roughly nine acres under the shadow of Linville Gorge. Formerly a historic dairy farm, it now hosts Fonta Flora’s 15-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, and small-scale working farm cultivating fruits, herbs, and grains used in select beers. The restored barns retain original stone walls built from nearby Paddy’s Creek river rock, maintaining the site’s rustic charm.

Why this is the move:

  • 20–30 min from Hawksbill trailhead
  • Massive outdoor space (perfect for groups)
  • Mountain + pasture views with Shortoff Mountain backdrop
  • Relaxed, “you earned this beer” vibe after a hike

This is widely considered one of the best post-Linville Gorge stops because of the setting and space to spread out

Should: be back by 7PM, depends on the car you ride up in.
