Self-awareness (dinner and discussion)

One of the benefits of practical philosophy is to compel us to strive for self-awareness which in turn affects every aspect of our lives. This event will provide the opportunity to delve into some interesting sub-topics within this theme from a practical perspective. As usual, our facilitators will be provided with thought-provoking questions to fuel the discussions. We encourage all of our members to view some of the Food for Thought videos prior to our events. These videos provide some common ground and a great way to break the ice with new members.

Facilitator Information

As previously mentioned, our members take turns helping to facilitate our discussions. We require one discussion facilitator for each table of 6 people but I doubt that we`ll have a problem finding volunteers.

Coordinator Information

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend this event in person but I will be coordinating it to run just as smoothly as the events which I'm able to attend in person. (The Meetup system automatically adds me to the RSVP list when I upload the events but I eventually remove my RSVP as soon as people sign up).

Payment Information

If you have any payment-related questions about this event, please see our Payment FAQs page first before emailing me since your questions will most likely be answered here:

Click here for all the Payment FAQs

If you would like to attend this event then you need to sign up as a member and RSVP for this event on-line through this website only. Please do not show up in person if you haven't signed up since there are limited seats available and this will cause confusion.

Please try to arrive on time (in consideration of your fellow attendees). Don't be shy to sign up to this event since I'll cancel and provide refunds if less than 6 people sign up. I will book an additional table of 6 people if there is enough interest in this event.

The discussions will begin once people have settled and have ordered their drinks/food.

Several of rhe participants sgreed with me that tjhis topic and the given questions fell more into the field of self help psycholgy than philosophy and this caused conflict of opinion for a select few?

yes. and the implications of what youre saying, Ian, if true, are pretty exciting. One thing that was said several times was it takes "practice" or repeated reminding and then it will become automatic, and that would be great.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback on this event. I've provided my two cents to this discussion at the topic of the event page. :)

Hello everyone. I've been reading some of the feedback from this event and I can see how some people may not be used to the practical approach that this group takes which is driven by the facilitator questions. I also admit that some of the topics and questions do overlap psychology as well, but again, I think this is because we're trying to approach these topics from a practical perspective. As I'm sure you're aware, there are many other philosophy Meetup groups that provide a forum to discuss theories, but when it comes to quotes such as "Know thyself", and "The unexamined life is not worth living", I believe that the more engaging discussions come from sharing personal insights in the pursuit of increased wisdom and happiness as opposed to hypothetical or specialized knowledge discussions (i.e. with regards to whether or not animals are self-aware for example). Please see this page for more details on the intentions of this group: http://philosophydinners.org/EventInfo.html

For me, I found it interesting to keep remembering to use "I-statements" when I was talking about myself, rather than using the more generic "You". For me, when I use "You" instead, and reference some "other" it makes it less about me and more about a fictional person.

I just reserved but the "pay now" page did not open. Maybe someone was reserving at the same time as it now says the event is full. I'd be delighted to attend if possible.

Hello Linda, I believe that you're not able to sign up for this event because it is full. We don't have more than 6 people per table and this is for several reasons. I'll be scheduling the next event soon though.
