What we're about

Welcome to the Winding Path Sangha (formerly the Iowa City Sangha) in Iowa City, Iowa.

Our Sangha (or "community") of lay practitioners follows the tradition of Vietnamese Buddhist teacher and peacemaker Thích Nhất Hạnh, who says there is no path to peace; peace is the path.

Because we know that path can be winding and often challenging, and to support peace within ourselves and in the world, our Sangha gathers weekly to meditate, hear from teachings by Buddhist teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh and others, share about our practice, and discern together how to live fully in the present moment at home, at work, and in our community.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of beliefs or previous experience with meditation, Buddhism, or mindfulness practices.

Whatever spiritual path has brought you to us today, however winding, we welcome you.

Meditation

Trinity Episcopal Church

During our time together, we'll get to know one another, spend time with guided and/or silent meditation, hear from the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh and take part in Dharma sharing (a chance to talk about our personal practice and application of mindfulness). Chairs and meditation cushions are available, but feel free to bring your cushion if you prefer. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can begin on time. We also ask that as you enter the room you remove your shoes as a way to honor our communal space, silence your cell phones, and observe noble silence while we wait for the session to begin. Members will have an opportunity to contribute dana (a free will donation) to help cover the nominal cost of renting this space, for altar flowers, for the Meetup page subscription and other expenses; please give if and as you're able. No donation is required to attend any of our sessions. On the first Wednesday of every month those who are interested are invited to remain after our meditation time (at about 8 p.m.) to recite the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, a set of precepts that offer us guidance on ethical and healthy living. Mindful Men Group

Bread Garden

Putting our mindfulness practice into, well, practice requires patience, skill, and the support of others. The Mindful Men Group meets on the second and fourth Sundays from 8-9:12 a.m. to offer men--those in the Winding Path Sangha, and those who just want to be more present and compassionate--that support, as well as conversation, laughter, and lasting friendship. Sometimes we focus on a topic (past themes have included dealing with the illness and aging that the Buddha said are inevitable for everyone, skillfully navigating relationships, and exploring what "real" masculinity looks like in the 21st century), and sometimes we simply open our time together to wide ranging discussions about the issues that matter most to us as men trying to be more mindful. Please join us if you can.

Walking Meditation followed by Coffee and Conversation

Hickory Hill Park

IMPORTANT! Effective March 2019, our walking meditation starting point and our post-meditation meeting spot have changed to the north/west entrance of Hickory Hill Park off Conklin Lane, and the HyVee Market Grille, respectively. This is an opportunity to take our meditation practice out into the world, specifically Hickory Hill Park in Iowa City. Walking Meditation is a form of slow, silent and mindful walking, where we enjoy nature and "kiss" the earth with each step. The Walking Meditation starts at the north/west entrance to Hickory Hill Park off Conklin Lane (across from the HyVee on Dodge Street/1st Avenue). At about 11 a.m., we'll gather for beverages and conversation at the HyVee Market Grille just across the street from the park entrance. This is a wonderful opportunity for newcomers who want to learn more about the Sangha. We will walk, (gentle) rain, snow, or sunshine, so please dress appropriately. In cases of extreme or dangerously cold or hot weather, however, we may cancel and only meet for coffee at 10 a.m. If that happens, we'll do our best to send out an announcement.
